How far did the ball hit from where you had been standing ? What
did the 2000 foot fall do to the bowling ball ?

Mike:
We had a good safety margin, but dropped from that altitude one gets
the sensation the ball is tracking you. It does move around a bit
from the forward momentum initially, then the wind plays with it, and
quite possibly the finger holes do too. It made a real freaky sounds
when it was falling.
When the ball hit the lake bed, it bounced about three feet. The wet
stuff under the crust is jelly like. Did no visible damage to the
ball.
All in a day's fun on the Alvord Desert. Look forward to being back
out there in May.
This type of activity is all part of the Kolb Family scene. Have to
chuckle. Last year or maybe the year before, somebody was making wise
cracks about the Kolb clique. Then when we started talking about
getting ready for the MV flyin we became the MV clique. If you attend
the Alvord flyin you are part of the Alvord clique. Neat thing about
all these cliques is, if you want to be a part of them, get yourself a
Kolb and fly on out. We are in the talking stage of a get together in
Louisiana about mid-July. A great opportunity for folks on the east
side of the Mississippi to get together.
More later,

John/All,
We tried bowling a few years ago, in the dead of winter dropping old
bowling balls on bare farmland. Two things were amazing: (1) the ball
rarely shattered and (2) it liked to bounce off the frozen ground so high it
seemed it would hit the airplane. Part of the fun was going out to find and
reclaim the ball, if possible.

Ed:
Reckon freezing weather had a lot to do with the balls shattering?
Imagine the frozen ground has a lot of resiliency???
Bet it would be fun to drop one on a frozen lake.
Doesn't take much to keep a Kolb pilot happy.

I never saw the Messerschmitt 163, the rocket-propelled single-seat
whizzbang. But it took off on a wheeled dolly, which was dropped, and
landed on a skid. They had to train the pilots to wait until they got
a bit of altitude before dropping the dolly; otherwise the dolly/
wheels would bounce back up & hit the aircraft!
Sounds like a bowling ball would be lots more fun. Wonder if the
weird noise was like parachuting with a football helmet that had
holes in it?

Hi Russ,
we had an exGerman glider, a Kranich, on my gliding field. That had the
same arrangement. Care was exercised.

Hi Ed,
thats reminds me. In 1948/9 I was posted to an artillery testing range which
fired solid shot across the mud of the Thames Estuary. Finding the shot
entailed crossing and wading through liquid mud. We soon found that even
swim suits were a bit of a drag, literally, so we often did it
,unofficially, in the nude. As we also female members of the team it was
quite a popular job.
Cheers
