top away from the exhaust.

Nooooooooo....not the top. You don't want it affected by
the sun. It needs to be on the underside of the plane, in the shade,
outside of any warm airflows from the engine.

I also think you want it at least a couple feet out from the wing root
and fuselage, better 4-5 ft. And the top of the wing doesn't separate
it from engine heat, beside getting sun effect. You want to know when
the wing leading edges approach freezing temp. Besides, you already
have access panels on the underside.
