Paul,
I've been wanting to checker board my rudder for a while. Can you give us some more details on where you got the material, how it is applied, cost, etc? Looks great!

Hi,
not quite the same but I once covered my glider trailer, about 35 ft long,
with blue woodgrain effect wallpaper. The effect was spectcular but
unfortunately towing to a neighbouring airfield in the rain the whole lot
came off.

Travelling behind were two little old ladies in an ancient car a little
larger than a Mini. The old dears carefully picked up all the wet, sticky,
wallpaper, folded it up and put it in their car. When I stopped a few miles
further on to check the trailer the old girls pulled up and proudly
presented me with this pile of soggy, gluey paper because `they thought I
would want it`.

I thanked them profusely and dumped the lot over the hedge as soon as they
were out of sight.

Cheers

Pat

We use vinyl graphics on our company pickups and also on our manufactured equipment which goes into some of the worst chemical and process enviorments you can imagine. The stuff we use has held up well for years.

I plan to use them for my N-numbers and some trim.

Rex

John H all,

Soapy water works however i used the solution the company I bought the 3M vinyl from. It's called "Splash" Works great. Im sure Vic can tell us much more about this process. For me I researched it and landed at this place>>>> http://www.jsisign.com/products/supercast.html You want a good grade of vinyl. I used 3M high performance vinyl. As for application it was easy. The directions on the "Splash" say to mist the solution on and slide the vinyl into place then squgee it. I found that this was no good and it may be because of the fabric substraight. I had to "Flood" the surface AND the vinyl in order to move the squares into their place. One thing is for sure when you squgee it it better be where you want it Wink As a tip for marking I used water based pens. I bought a 15"X10yd roll and had a girl in FL cut it out. I sent her the Kolbra decal and she scanned and made me the same decals in the same blue color. She also made me my N numbers and the "Builder/pilot" in script. Real neat. Cost for the vinyl was $45.00 and she only wated to charge me for shipping but I sent her $50.00 anyway. Any local graphics shop can do this however either Vic or someone who knows aircraft will have the talent to make your graphics look "Aircrafty" hehehe

oops!
Left one part out....the checker board squares were just peal, wet and apply. The decals have transfer paper that hold them in place till you finish the squgee deal. Then you wait 2 minutes, flood the paper and carefully peal the paper off at a 45 degree angle! Squgee???? Is that even close to being spelled right? Rolling Eyes

Paul thanks for the "plug".
You probably ordered from a girl in Fl. because she was, oh say, purtier than me.
Aplication fluid works good for large surface areas. Dry is best on the rest.
I use a clear aplication tape, makes it easier to see what your doing and is good for multiple color registration.
The slickest way to keep your #'s or graphic in place is to tape it in the center. Peel back the aplication tape with the graphic half way and cut the backing paper. Squeege that side and your vinyl won't move from there, then remove the tape you used for positioning and the remainder of backing paper, squeege the other half remove the application tape and Presto your done!
Do not apply in direct sunlight!
I use high perfomance vinyl on GA just because. It's thinner, 3 times the cost, and harder to work with.
The less expensive intermediate vinyl may shrink slightly after a couple years but neither one will will come off. I've put a pressure washer directly against letters on my tailgate and they didn't come off.
I asked Travis about making their logos in different sizes and colors to match different aircraft. He said he didn't have any problem with it.
Quite a while back I even made Kolb mugs for the crew at TNK.
