I am trying to find the information up to what temperature and/or humidity Cortec VCI-373 can be applied to aluminum. I am using Zinc Chromate but I have problems with high temperature and humidity here in SW Florida as Zinc Chromate can only be used up to 80F and/or 60% humidity.

Hi Pete:
 I dilute Cortec 373 50/50 with denatured alcohol. The alcohol flashes off very quickly, the temp in my shop is 70 and the humidity has been as high as 70%. I have attached info from Cortec, there is no temp or humidity data.

I did check the "Cortec" website, but there is no information on the product data sheet regarding temps/humidity. I have sent an email but no answer so far.

  Anyone have experience of using Cortec as a primer on the outside of an aircraft? What paint would be compatible?

As this discussion continues, I must interject how much I disliked the Cortec. I found it to be very easy to apply, but crappy thereafter. It was sticky and held aluminum chips/shavings in tight places. It liked to peel, like Elmer's glue - especially when two pieces rubbed together (like when you move the wing skin around on the ribs). It also sucks to mark on with a sharpie afterwards.

I will admit that when I went back to mess with one part about a year later, the stuff had dried much better and held to the part better. But, that was literally a year later.

I am now using the Dupli-Color self-etching primer that you get at auto stores. I have to go outside or in the garage to spray (with a regular mask), but it is so much easier and nicer!

I’m using Cortec also and I’ve experienced the problems stated by Michael bellow however, there are ways to mitigate this. I typically roughen the surface with scotchbrite and clean it well before applying, then I let it dry for 24 hours and this avoid the problem of peeling out.



To remove chips/shavings of metal stick in the aluminum I use a cloth slightly damped with denatured alcohol for open spaces and a brush for the tight places, this un-stick the chips and after that I vacuum them out of the assembly.


Even with this inconveniences, I thing Cortec is still easier to apply than any other method. What I don’t know is if it provide equal protection in the long run .

How much are you thinning the Cortec? I use 50/50 Cortec/Denatured alcohol.

I asked Cortec a similar question because I wanted to paint over some of it inside the cabin area. This was their response:
Gordon

You can apply any acrylic coating as a top coat to VpCI 373. This would
include most products that you find at local hardware stores. You can also
apply virtually and urethane coating. If there is a specific coating that
you would like to apply, please let me know and I can advise about
compatibility.

Changing the subject to the metal chips, does anyone EVER get rid of all the chips? I'm past the kit assembly and I still have to vacuum chips daily.
