Just purchased a kitfox 7 project that started in 2002 but was evidently exposed to Houston's humidity. I have surface rust that go from specks to spots. On the edges of metal it's more like a string of specks and on the tubing more like numerous specks to spots. Is there something I can do other than strip the airframe, the paint and repaint???

Powder coat rusting??? Not unless it has contaminates in it or is coming up from underneath it or migrated from some other area. This has to be checked soon. See if it will clean off and then check for pin holes where it is coming up through. I have used a product called Rust Fix. It does a chemical thing with the rust and turns black, works good on my truck rebuild. Probably not good with structural parts. With the info you have given that is all I have.

Albert,
I was thinking the same thing.

George, are you sure it is power coating and not just a paint?

A powder coat works to prevent rusting by providing a barrier to Oxygen
. It otherwise has no antirust capabilities such as is provided by
chromate epoxy paints. If powder coat is applied over rust, or is too
thin, or incomplete, or the barrier is broken rust will progress quite
happily beneath the powder coat. The only thing you can do is remove
the powder coat, remove the rust, apply a phosphate conversion coating
to take care of any residual corrosion in pits, and paint with a
corrosion inhibiting paint.

Well stated Jerry. The only thing I would like to add is rusting usually
requires an electrolyte like water or even water vapour. Ferrous metals
kept in a really dry location (say Nevada) won't rust without the aid of a
humidifier in the hangar. With any miniscule amount of moisture in the air
and microscopic cracks in the powder coat filiform corrosion will creep
under the "good" coating. The sooner corrective action is taken the better.

Good useful Info by everyone! Of course not what I wanted to hear. All the wood for speed wing and other areas are epoxied in-place as well as most things assembled aft of the the fire wall. So do I trash everything or is there a way to remove epoxy with out destroying the attachments?

Epoxy is a resin. You may be able to release it with careful use of heat.

George, Don't throw it out yet. Rust showing up on the powder coated 4130 parts seemed to be fairly common when I purchased my kit in the early 90's. I had some show up on mine too. The concensus then was to sand off the powder coat at the rust spot and touch up with epoxy and touch up paint. When I sanded on the rust spots to reveal the source under the powder coat it was very minimal. The rust underneath was thin and on the surface of the 4130 only and confined to a small area around where it showed on the surface of the powder coat. The rust has not shown up again after I sanded and touched mine up.

Mind you I live in a desert climate and the rust was minimal...probably about 5 or 6 places on the fuselage and no more than an inch or so in any one location. I guess I would start sanding on your rust spots and see what you find undernearth. Then, depending on the severity and where on the airframe it is located, evaluate how to fix it.
