I started putting the route from MMI to Monument Valley in my trusty old Garmin 89 and discovered it wasn't so trusty now. Seems it has lost about a half dozen more horizonal lines on the display, enough that it is hard to enter the identifiers. I am interested in a Garmin 96 or a used 196 if anyone has one for sale. Contact me off list please.
I flew for about 1.5 hours Monday with 20 kt winds at 1000' AGL. The wind was hitting the mountain here at about 30 degrees creating a very efficient flight if you needed to go North. The power setting was giving about 65 kts straight and level out over the valley until I started running the ridge. I was then getting 80 kts indicated and 100kts on the GPS with ROC = 0. I spotted a yellow Vagabond below me playing on the ridge as well, I think it was Sara who manages the Chilhowee Gliderport.

I bought my Garmin 196 used on ebay last year for 500 bucks...go check there.
And BTW....after useing it on the first flight, I would have paid double if I had known what it would do, and how easy it is to use.

I looked long and hard at the 196 but ended up with a Lowrance Airmap 1000. Picked one up at Sun-n-Fun for $375. Played with for a while on the ride home while Carol was driving. I think i'm going to like it. Time will tell...

Steven, Try looking at a Lowrance 2000c. 3"x4.25" screen. All the mounts you could imagine, charger, bat. backup,or panel power. Great for old half blind farts like me.
$700 brand new complete. And no I'm not seling them.

I have a Lowrance 2000c that I am extremely happy with. The package was just over $700 complete, nothing else for me to buy....with the exception of a USB interface cable that is not really needed.
I recommend looking at the 2000c, I believe it offers the biggest bang for the buck. All things considered I don't know what would top the 2000c however I would certainly like to know what others have found.

All things considered I don't know what would top the 2000c however I
would certainly like to know what others have found.

I don't know about others, but I have thoroughly enjoyed flying with
my Garmin 196. It has proven to be an invaluable aid, making my long
cross country flights a lot safer, and more fun.

I, too, have the Garmin 196, and tho' I haven't used it too much in the air - just in rentals - it seems to do a very good job. I do use it a lot while on my cross-country driving trips, and it lives on the center console of the Diesel Dodge while traveling. You should be aware, for this use, that the MapSource database is very old and out of date. The freeway systems of Baltimore, MD and Los Angeles, CA come to mind, as do numerous attempts to locate a facility such as a campground. Many times, it's taken me way off into the tules to a vacant lot. It works well, and I really like it, but now I back it up with a map. Lar.

bought the city select map source... which gives turn by turn
