What does it say about the voting aviation enthusiast that Top Gun
was voted the "greatest aviation movie of all time"? (EAA Hotline)

It didn't get my vote...I voted for anything with pistons...

I don't know if it was the greatest movie or not but that movie cost me
almost $15K. I had been away from aviation for a while and my divorce was
just final. Went to see Top Gun and started looking for an airplane to buy
the very next day. Bought a Cherokee 140 a few days later. That's a true
story.

The movie that I always wanted to see is Hell's Angels, a WW I movie
produced by Howard Hughes. There is an epic just on the making of that
movie.

Yes! I am not the only guy on the planet who holds a torch for "Flight Of The Phoenix"! As a life-time model aircraft builder, I like the "aircraft engineer's" lines when he is discovered to be a model aircraft builder. He defends his craft by pointing out that the model aircraft must be built to exacting standards because it does not have the luxury of a pilot to add corrective control input and counteract a warped wing.

Another great movie in my opinion is: "The Rocketeer" Set in the 30's any character in the movie could be one of us experimenting with pistons, tubes, wood, rags and dope! ...Oh, and rocket power!

I have both Top Gun and the Rocketeer on DVD. Look real good on a 40" LCD HDTV! However, I would like to see that Howard Hughes movie as well.

Kent

I have all 3 and prefer the Rocketeer my self. The Howard Hughes movie
spends too much time on his mental state and not enough on his
accomplishments

The Hughes movie we're thinking about is Hell's Angels, a movie he directed
and produced about the dogfights of the first world war. I agree with you
and the Hughes Biopic.

Don,
Great movie? I don't know, but sometimes we do crazy things. After seeing
the movie for the first time, my next flight was into Fairbanks I was
carring an empty 100lb propane bottle strapped down behind me in a
C-172.....I made it and everything was in place when I arrived.

Yes! Another very good flying movie. I've got a tape of this one, and
watch it every now and then. I took note of the propping scene where
Waldo bounces the prop backwards against compression, to kick the
engine to life...I've done this with model engines many times.

Some favorites, although I have not seen al those
mentioned.

"The Great Waldo Pepper"

Lynn Matteson noted: I took note of the propping scene
where
Waldo bounces the prop backwards against compression,
to kick the
engine to life...

An old pilot I knew, who learned in the 30's in an
Aeronca C-2, said that was authentic, I think he said
it was a Standard biplane with a Hispano-Suiza engine,
and that is how they were started, rather than pulling
them through.

That movie had great wing-walking scenes, and the
scene of the biplane flying down Main Street in a
prarie town was authentic, they did take down the
wires, though. Had the wrong person as first to do
the outside loop, I think. Good for repeated watching
from time to time.

"Battle of Britain" had many great dogfighting scenes,
using real Hurricanes and Spitfires flying off grass,
and surplus Spanish BF-109's and Heinkles from the
Spanish Air Force, also flying off grass fields. It
also used models for the Stukas crashing in mid-air.
It was authentic to the story. Also good for repeated
watching.

"Hells Angles" is available, but was a disappointment,
not watchable over again for a long time. I think the
new movie, "Flyboys" looks like a remake of many of
its scenes, but with unrealistic computerized
dogfights and pilots able to yell to each other in
flight. Have only seen it once, so don't know how
realistic the story is or about the SE-5a's,
Nieuports, and Fokkers. Sad ending - the main guy
never flies again.

"Jet Pilot" did have beautiful F-80 & F-86 flying
scenes, courtesy of the USAF.

There are sellers of aviation movies. Also check your
local library, ours has some of these because they are
old.

Shucks, ya ruined the ending for me, John....now when I watch it
for the 6th time, I'll already know the ending....but wait, if I wait
about a week, I'll have forgotten and it'll be new all over again.Smile
