I am told that there is A difference between aircraft terminals and hardware store terminals. are the ring terminals sold at aircraft spruce aircraft terminals or are they the same as hardware store termonals? looking for some feed back thanks Gerry

Generally on MIL spec terminals there is a metal band that crimps the insulation, this band is covered by the insulator. On cheaper hardware store/automotive copies the metal band is missing and all that grips the wire insulator is the plastic of the terminal.

Perhaps even more important is the quality of the crimper. The typical
hardware crimper isn't likely to give that 'gas tight' joint to prevent
corrosion within the joint.

I have seen spade connectors at autozone that had the metal that crimps the insulators. There were some other ones that only crimped the wire only but these looked like they could me of the same type. I did not see anthing on the package that had any mils ratings on there tho.

What you are looking for is AMP PIDG (or equivalent).  On the MIL spec (AMP PIDG), the metal part of the crimp sleeve is longer (deeper).  They can look similar to the cheep HW/auto style from the outside.  You have to look “into” the sleeve and assess the length (depth) of the metal part of the crimp area.  Ideally, the metal part is long (deep) enough to crimp onto both the bare wire and the insulation (if done correctly).  This is rarely the case with the cheep HW/auto versions.  On those, only the plastic part of the crimp sleeve crimps onto the insulation (which is insufficient to properly secure the wire).  Unfortunately I’ve found, most ads/catalogs usually don’t clearly specific whether they are the cheep HW/auto type or the better Aero (PIDG) type.

See here for AMP PIDG data sheet: http://ecommas.tycoelectronics.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=showdoc&DocId=Customer+Drawing%7F36161%7FZ%7Fpdf%7FEnglish%7FENG_CD_36161_Z.pdf

You can get the correct ones from here: http://www.bandc.biz/cgi-bin/ez-catalog/cat_display.cgi?12X358218#s814r8-10 at reasonably competitive prices (20 - 30 cents each).  I’d be interested if you find them much cheaper somewhere else.

These also appear correct:  http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/insulterms.php  Note in the photo,  the metal part of the crimp barrel is nearly as long as the plastic insulation (versus only ½ as long as on typical HW/auto style.

There are three differences between the hardware store variety of terminals and Mil Spec terminals. As others here have said, there is a sleeve that grips the insulation to spread the mechanical loads to minimize flexing where the wire exits the crimp. This is where the wire will work harden, become brittle and break. Secondly, the seam on the barrel is brazed closed on the Mil Spec terminals. Many of the hardware store variety are just formed into a barrel that will open when crimped unless the crimp is done correctly. The third difference is that hardware store terminals usually have vinyl insulation. The Mil Spec demands nylon insulation which will outlast vinyl many times over. In addition, Mil Spec products are produced under exacting quality standards.

Go here to find a good variety of Mil Spec terminals and tools that properly crimp them. http://www.terminaltown.com/

If you're ordering terminals from Aircraft Spruce, I'd recommend that you double check the AMP part numbers on them. Hard to believe, but quite a while ago I ordered some butt splices from them and received the cheap vinyl ones without the extra sleeve ... they immediately went into the garbage can. I also notice that some of their ring terminals use the word "vinyl" in the description. I can vouch that B&C, Terminal Town and others know what "real" PIDG Mil-Spec terminals are.

Other people have reported ordering plumbing fittings with MS part
numbers, and receiving fittings without any markings on them. The
Mil-Spec requires that hardware be marked, so these fittings clearly
did not meet the Mil-Spec. Anyone ordering stuff from ACS should
inspect what they get very carefully to ensure they have not
substituted a lower quality item.

I won't speculate as to whether these problems are due to poor
quality control or fraud.
