Hi fellow listers,

I started fitting my left and right wings to the fuselage last weekend and was wondering if anyone had recorded the measurements for the distance from the left and right wing tip back to a common reference point.

I used the centre point of the last former of the rear turtle deck and got a measurement of 1850mm or 72.83 inches. This measurement was with both of the rear spar's as hard up against the centre of flap control arm as I could get them.

The plans say that it is important to get both measurements within 50mm (both my measurements are the same) but there is no mention about the effects of the wings being swept either forward or backward.

I know its more an optical illusion then reality, but looking down the wings from wing tip to wing tip the wings appear to be swept forward.

For anyone that has gone through this already did you notice or encounter this and if so how did you solve it.

Best Regards,
Eddie

Eddie,

The wings are indeed swept forward slightly.

Hi Gerry

Thanks for the reply, I am going to have another go at setting up my wings this weekend, I think that one of my issues might be that the flap control arm is stopping the wing from swinging back far enough, so I will recheck this.

For anyone else that interested, I forgot to mention that this is on a 601XL

Regards,
Eddie

Eddie, The wings are not swept forward. Scott Laughlin just did his wing attach last weekend. He had the same question. What you''re seeing is the result of the wing spar being tilted back. Lay a straight edge along the spar (up between the wing and fuse--with the wing attached to the fuse). If you run a string from wing tip to wing tip, the straight edge should hit the string dead nuts. So,,,,,the rivet line is straight as a string --wing tip to wing tip if you "tip" your viewing angle the same number of degrees the spar is tilted back. Hope this helps.

Eddie

The way I understand the geometry and the way I did it:
The rivet line of the main spar will fall beneath a tip to tip string only
when the main spar is vertical.

If you lower the tail until the wing spar is vertical, the main spar rivet
line is directly beneath the tip to tip string. The wings are in the
required position.
After rotating the aircraft to level the dihedral of the wings sweeps the
tips forward.
In this position, the main spar rivet line is behind the string at mid wing
span.

Thanks to eveyone who replied, I'll have another go at this again this weekend. I'll lower the tail as suggested to set the spar at 0 degress and check the wing angle, I'll post some photo's and comments on my website.
