Details? Sorry but from reading your email and
looking at the subject line, there's no way to tell
what you are referring to. It sounds important.
Please provide more information.

Plane crash kills 2
Former MID chairman and flight school owner die in Oakdale orchard
By ADAM ASHTONand TIM MORAN, BEE STAFF WRITERS
Last Updated: February 9, 2006, 04:29:16 AM PST
OAKDALE, A two-seat airplane crashed Wednesday afternoon, killing a
prominent Modesto businessman and a flight school owner near Oakdale
Airport.
Sources close to the investigation said the victims were former Modesto
Irrigation District Chairman Chuck Billington, 65, and Modesto Flight
Center co-owner Dave Mesenhimer, 61.
Billington's plane, believed to be a Zenith Zodiac 601 SL, went down at
3:18 p.m. in an orchard off Sierra Road, Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt.
Mike Parker said.
Parker said it wasn't clear where or when the plane had taken off. He also
said he wasn't sure whether the plane was landing at Oakdale Airport.

I saw this on the news on TV last night. Sad. They interviewed two
eyewitnesses who both claimed that they saw one wing fold up during
flight, and then the other. At the very end of the broadcast the
reporter mentioned "the plane was called a Zenith Zodiac." That caught
my attention for sure. The FAA/NTSB was investigating, and we know how
accurate the news media is, so I'll be waiting for the NTSB report to
see what really happened. It was clear and beautiful weather the last
few days, so that wasn't a factor...
Here's a link to a short article on the TV station's site:

It's hard for me to imagine wings folding up on a Zodiac as stout as these things are. Had to be something extreme going on...or forgotten. don

And "It could have crashed into my house"...This statement annoyed the
snot out of me....Little does the home owner know the pilot would give
his life to avoid him and his precious white picket fence if he could
have!

Frank, I agree that such statements by 'civilians' demeans all of us. The news vultures must think that as we are trying to maintain hope of life and doing all we can to survive on the way down we look for the odd school bus or senior citizen home to slam into. Just another ill example that blood and pain sells. Best to you and my endless sympathy for the families of those lost. Bill Phillips N505WP 601XL-3300

No Frank,
The pilot actually DID give his life and kept from crashing into the
house at the same time. Nuf' said.

Preliminary report here: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20060217X00209&key=1
It was in the new owners hands less than two months before the crash. It was still operating under a temporary registration.
Looks like the kit was purchased in 2002, airworthiness certificate in Apr-2005 ... about a 2.5 year build?
Engine type is unknown (AMA/EXPR). It seems to be a default engine designation for many homebuilts.
I can't imagine what would make the wings fold up like that unless the spar attach points failed or the spare bolts were gone? It hardly seems plausible.

I saved three photographs of N105RH from when it was listed on either Trade-a-Plane or Barnstormers (can't remember which). Based on the photographs it appears that it had the newer Jabiru 3300 cowling. I'd be happy to email these to anyone interested.
