Hi all,

Having trouble getting my secondary ignition to work. I installed a new TP
45 and verified the 12V power to the system. Is there any way to verify
that the magnetic pickup is operational? When initially installed, the
system was operational. I even sent it to Templeman and he gave it a "clean
bill of health". Any suggestions?

Do you have access to an oscilloscope?

If you are talking about the Stratrus backup ignition that runs off the flywheel, I believe it is a hall effect sensor. It has a power lead that supplies 12 volts. The other two leads are the output.

Using the oscilloscope you would see the hall effect level increase, then decrease (a pulse) when a magnet is passed by.

If not, you can use a voltmeter and you should be able to measure the voltage rise when you place a magnet close to the pickup. If you move the magnet by slowly, the hall effect will trip high and stay there so the meter will have time to measure it then go back down as the magnetic has passed. Any small magnet should work, no need to use the flywheel. Just remove the pickup and pass a magnet by.

Regards,
Bill

John,
If you're speaking of the magnetic pickup at the flywheel, these can
become intermittently-functional.
On my first flight, the secondary ignition magnetic pickup quit and as I
taxied back to the hangar, it
became functional again. Mykal informed me that a few of the pickups
were overheated during their
soldering process and would do that. He exchanged the one I'd sent him
and I've had no problems
with it since. Not sure how to test one though. You might post this to
the Aeroelectric List for the
technical side of testing pickups. They really get into this sort of thing.

So John to added a TP 45 to the secondary flywheel pickup? This is the
first time I have heard of anyone doing this.

Usually thay are driven from the Subaru pickup in the distributor. To
add a second system one normally has two pickups in the same
distributor.

I can tell you that with the subaru pickup the engine has to be cranked
pretty fast to make it fire....Is yours just not starting or not running
at all?

The second tip is to reverse the connections from pickup to the
TP45...It will only work one way and there are a number of wiring
diagrams floating around showing it wired up the wrong way.

Thirdly...Do you have the stud on the TP45 to a solid ground?...This is
NOT the "C" connection...but one of the bolt holes has a slightly wider
metal flange...That has to be to a good ground or it won't work.

To suimarise,

B is +12v
C goes to the -ve terminal of the coil (NOT grounded)
Bolt hole is grounded
G to +ve output of the pickup
W to -ve output of pickup

Try swapping the last two terminals....But remember it may not start
easily with this, but it should keep the engine running of course.

Hope this helps

Frank
