I  have just finished making nad installing a custom mount for a pitot/static tube (Spruce) for my mode 4 thanks to  Lynn Matteson for his help and info. Know the problem,the original tube has you drill a 17/64 hole in the spar at a 90 degree piont to install the line that goes to the cockpit.My pitot/static tube needs two lines.A construction manual I have says there is no tress on holes at a 90 degree piont to the vertical,so can I elongate the and run both lines thru, or should I drill two separate holes X distance apart.----Leon Morris/Classic 4(1994)/50%/Flower  Mound, TX

Hi Leon,



I didn't even drill the one hole.  I ran the line over

to the back side of the spar and made a seperate entry

into the cockpit behind the spar.  Watch how you bend

the line though for wing folding.  And you need the

line to go over the spar near a rib or it will have

fabric stuck to it when you cover the wing.  The

fabric dips between ribs a good bit and almost lays on

the spar.



If you go with the spar hole, yes, the least stress is

at the 90 degree point, so that is where they made the

hole.  It should be a very smooth hole too, or you add

stress risers, places where it likes to crack, just

like doing a windscreen.



If you make 2 holes too close together, it is possible

for a crack to form between them.  A single hole along

the length, but no greater along the diameter of the

spar, is better.  If you go with 2 holes, make them

more than tripple the spar diameter apart.  I would

tripple the diameter because stress tends to run at a

45 degree angle.  That is 1.414 times the diameter.  2

holes x 1.414 = 2.828 diameters.  I rounded to 3 or

greater for safety.



To me, this is a place where the pitot and static

lines can chafe thru over time.  You don't need any

additional reasons to recover a wing between the

lifetime of the fabric.  And then there are those

rivet heads inside the spar to rub on too.



Did anyone else use any antichafe system on these

lines?

I did not drill any holes in the spar. Ran the tubes down the rear of the 

wing. Drilling spars just doesnt sound right.

When building my model 5 I installed the Dynon with pitot and AOA lines. Drilling one hole in the spar gave me the willies, TWO??  So I ran the lines out to the wing tip, lacing them with rib stitching along the way and then back through the entire length of the rear spar and used a foam plug to center the lines for anti chafing.  40 hours since new. One more flight and phase 1 is complete.
