I am slowly completing construction of 601HD from a  kit and am at point of installing the side-opening canopy that came with the  kit.  Before beginning assembly I would like to research the pros and cons  of a front opening canopy. I know that George Pinneo (Zenair News #111 and #116)  and others have developed front opening canopies for the HD.  I would like  to know George's and others comments from their experiences with the  modified front opening canopy.  I would not be interested in the XL type of  canopy as it requires modification of the front fuselage.  Research of the  archives has provided some assistance but any other comments would be  appreciated.

 You might also want to look at alternate methods of  hinging and locking the side-opening canopy.  I imagine you can find some  reference in the archives.  One builder who employed an alternate method is  Jeff Small.  He is still on the list and may be willing to share  information with you, as he did with me.

the website

shows an alternate latching mechanism that is positively locked from the 

in side

and cannot be opened accidentally. The biggest drawback of the side-opening

is in high wind conditions. At that time, one must be VERY careful so that

the canopy does not take off. I had that once in California, with 30 kts 

gusting

to 37. It was very difficult to get out of the plane without inflicing 

damage on

the canopy. The other drawback is the inconvenence of opening and closing

and opening and closing when loading the plane. Oh well, I had that system

now for 11 years, and am used to it. But convenient it is not.
