`Doug,
Re the GENTEX SPH 4B
I'm using the subject helmet in my YAK 50. There's plenty of room at
canopy level
I ordered and received a brand new copy; paid about $300. then went to
Bender at Spruce Creek and had the military headset converted to civilian
accessory for about $100. This is better than the $1200. I would have had
to pay for a comparable hard hat through normal channels. Sure, it's a
helicopter hat but when I finished fastening a large red star decal and
some other do dads , no one knows the difference. The guy in the YAK 52
who tried to bounce me last Friday never knew what kind of a hat I was
wearing when I was in position 30 seconds later and flamed his skinny
ass. And then there was this red faced old guy in a CJ whose primary
experience was gained while eating his crew meals from a tray on a
pillow in his lap while in the cockpit of his BOING ....... Will they
ever learn? Sorry, Doug; things were just getting too quiet.

I use the SPH 4 for ag flying and I love it. It has an air gap around your ears that makes it much cooler than the HGU series helmets. A great ad on is a noise canceling mod that is available from Ron Deck at Sky Tractor Supply. There are a lot of surplus ones on ebay and a deal can be had from time to time. It sounds like Clif got a great deal though. I have a lot of problems with the screws loosening up though, so a little loc tite is nice to use when working on Gentex products.
