Would any of you guys on floats provide some examples of what take-off times
you are getting?
The attached spread sheet contains a simplified version of the formula on
the Stinson site. This one just multiplies wing loading, power loading and
float loading times a constant.

The two Rans examples look pretty good in that they are close to my actual
numbers. The 170 number is also pretty close. The original formula gave me a
time of 5 or six seconds which is way off. If you play with different
weights this one seems to work. Not sure if variations in hp work as well.
Since I'll also be trying two more sets of floats on this plane the affect
of buoyancy will also be stest.
Peter

Peter,

Wish I has something to add to your good work. No float experience but hope to build a pair for my e-lsa in the future.

Thanks for posting the results of your work.

Today would have been great but The insurance isn't in yet. I'll let you know about my performance.

Peter
AFRAID I DON'T HAVE MUCH TO OFFER -- HAVE (sorry, hit caps) flown a
few floatplanes, owned a 170, old engine, Edo 2000's. Got about 16-18
sec run usually, one person aboard. Stuff like PBY's seem to take
forever. Beaver, Otter, Norseman I'd guess 20 sec or so but I didn't
take measurements.
A friend once designed and built, starting with a clean sheet of
paper! -- an ultralight biplane flying boat. Spoilers lower wing
only, Flew fine but he was afraid of it. New owner I think crashed it.
Have seen the Lotus single-float with Lee's retractable gear; not too
impressed.
I hope to get a Classic or Extra & make it amphibious, floating-hull.
Floats are too fragile for what I need to do with an aircraft. Don't
know how I'll handle the wing floats. Fold-down wingtips would be
great! -- but complicated.
Where are you located? Fresh water or salt?

Hello Russ.
The problem I have with floating hulls is the docking issue re the tip
floats. Docking a twin float plane is so much easier since almost any boat
dock will do. Unless you can always go into beaches docking in a stiff
breeze can be stressful.
Peter

My S7 on floats is still for sale.

I entered my plane's data and it predicted 11 seconds. Proven by this
video taken Sunday, my take off is more like 6 seconds.

John, what is your data so I can play with the formula. There isn't much
reason why my formula should work. I have no real knowledge of the
relationship between float volume, hp, weight and wing area. It was just
curious that it seemed to be right for a 170 and a Rans.

Here is your file back with the data from my plane.
Also attached is the complete W&B and performance spec sheet for the
Challenger on wheels and floats. Hope this helps.
