I have tried to get information several times with nothing but silence. Are there no XL TD builders who are flying on this list?

I have several requests:

1. I am interested in the weights from the three scales with the airplane leveled for weight and balance determination. The CG location and condition of the plane, empty, gross, etc. would also be useful.

2. I have the $45 plans for the TD conversion from ZAC. However, the illustrated builders guide appears to have at least three different structural configurations depicted all mixed together. Is this so? If it is, then how difficult is it to dope out the correct path when scratch building that area?

The reason I am concerned is that the TD conversion appears to be "rube goldberg-y" compared to the tricycle version. The factory assures me that it is fine but based on a career exposed directly to aircraft engineering, I am concerned with the longevity of the design with that conversion installed. Since I plan to do a TD only build, It is a big issue if I ever need to convert to nose gear.

If there are any TD builder/flyers out there on this list, please respond or at least respond off list if need be. If any others know of a builder that is not on the list and would forward my e-mail to them I would also be grateful.

Thank you very much.

Dave,
I'm building a TD with a Corvair but I'm not going to be much help
right now because I'm just getting the parts gathered together. I
haven't driven a rivet yet. But I am located in PA. Lewistown to be exact.

Thanks for the response Kevin;

I am in Harleysville PA about 2.5 hours from you (it looks). I will file your email and perhaps in the future we can assist each other if there are questions that come up.

Dave,

I have a flying HDS / TD / Corvair. I am not
sure what "rube goldberg-y" means, but the design is
sound. I also scratch built all landing gear
components. It was a piece of cake. Check the
archives from about 6 months ago. I had a lengthy
post on how and why I went about converting from the
tailspring and fork setup described in the plans to a
Matco full swivel tailwheel setup. The price was
right, it could have saved a bunch of time, and
handles MUCH better on the ground. Please forward
specific questions to me personally, as I seldomly
monitor the list these days...

David,

I am and have been building a TD version of the XL for the past 4 years. I hope to have it flying soon. I am just now getting ready to do weight and balance, if fact I tried to do it today with 3 walmart spring scales but discovered (should have known) that the weight at either of the main gear is over 300 lbs, well over the limit of the scales.

The plans for the TD version I used for my aircraft are probably the same ones you purchased since I don't think there has been any update to them in the last few years. I found the detail in the drawings sufficient to build from with some thought and some improvisation. The photo assembly guides were not so helpful.

As far as converting an XL build as a TD to a tricycle gear, It could be done but I think it would be difficult. If you are having second thoughts about the TD configuration and thinking you could convert it to a trike later, maybe you should think about it some more before you decide.

Take a look at my web site, lots of pictures that may help. I have recently added a search feature to help locate areas of interest.
