Ben,
I purchased the “Metalworking 101” video from Homebuilt help and watched it 3 times just before I went to the Factory rudder workshop. It made the building much easier. However, the video is for a 701 rudder and I built a 601 rudder. There is one part of the spar that you cut the corners off for the 701 but do not on the 601. I got arrogant and cut off the corners before I looked at the plans. STUPID!! One lesson that I learned is to READ THE PLANS! DUUUA!!!
To sum it up:
After seeing the video I felt I could probably start building. After taking the workshop, I was sure that I could. I’ve spent much more than $300.00 on a weekend and didn’t have half as much fun. Even if I don’t end up building, I still have a rudder hanging in my shop to remind me of the good time that I had. You don’t have to wait until you get your ticket before you start.
I also have a copy of “Scratch Building Basics for Metal Aircraft” that Larry Winger loaned me (I’ve got to get it back to him!). It is also a great video.
