I am building a 601XL from a quick-build kit. I chose the dual stick option and it involves drilling into the spar and attempting to snake a nut down the channel and onto an AN3 bolt that is about 9” away. If any of you have done this successfully please, please, please tell me how you did it! I have been trying for about a day and so far I am not winning the war. I understand they now rivet this in place at the factoryL
Thanks for any suggestions.

I have someone else's picture someplace but can't find it. You may have already tried this but as I recall you duct-tape an open-ended wrench to the end of a stick to extend the reach. Then you stick the nut to the wrench with more tape. You want to just hold the nut enough to keep it in place. Place the tape on the rear side of the wrench and nut so the bolt is free to enter from the front.
An inspection mirror to look through the bolt hole and an extra set of hands would help.

Skip,
I did that job with the center spar section out of the airplane and on a work table. That probably isn't an option with the quick build kit. Anyway, I used one of those old shirt-pocket, telescoping pointers. To that I duct-taped an open-end box wrench. To the open end wrench, I put a small piece of duct tape on the flat which would be at the back when inserted into the spar slot. That little piece of duct tape holds the nut. The bolt is inserted and rotated from the outside. It sounds a lot easier than it really is! Patience, a steady hand and more patience are an absolute necessity. A good, full set of verbal obscenities might be helpful. Good Luck !!!

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Here's another one you can try: Almost every auto parts store, and Walmart, has an articulated plastic extension originally designed to insert spark plugs. You bend it (the plastic pieces sort of snap into the curve you need) around whatever's in the way, and turn the knob on your end to rotate the inner shaft. The business end has a sleeve to hold the spark plug. Just tape a small extension on the end, put some sticky stuff in the socket to hold the nut, and apply to the offending part. There's also a similar tool that ends in a 1/4 in. drive, that works even easier.

Why cuss the girlfriend? It's the Zenith design that causes the cussing.

Skip, it's not too difficult if you make a tool. I took a cheapo 3/8 box in wrench and sawed the open end off. Then I welded a ten inch steel shaft to the end I cut off. Then I heated the bend just below the box end and straightened out the whole shaft. Now I could reach the back of the inside of the center spar where the nuts are located. To hold the nut in the wrench while I turned the bolt on the outside I used some yellow "elephant snot" adhesive. When tight. remove the wrench from the nut. Worked fine and you will really be happy you chose the dual stick, Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Actually, after I got a flat open end wrench and used duct tape and wire ties to attach it to the end of a steel ruler it was not too hard to do.
