I was surprised not to find a thread about wheel balancing. Am I the only
one who has shaky tires. The red dot is mounted at the valve stem per
instructions, and tires are fully beaded. No "out of round" is apparent when
spun. Just before nose rotation, tire vibration is enough too rattle the plane.
I've talked to a half dozen A&P's who have never balanced tires! These are certified tires.
I would prefer to spin balance them on the plane. Thanks.

I have the big tires and with the Grove gear my tires shake. I have to keep the speed low to prevent. Now, I called Robbie and he said to balance the tires and he gave me some ideas. turn the wheel on the airplane, I think you can use a sander and run it on the wheel and spin it, take some tape on weights and start putting them on the inside of the rim. I feel you will need to probably remove the brakes or spread them out and loosen the wheel bearings a bit to work properly. Another Idea I have is to put a stiffener on the back section of the Grove gear, fair it at the back for aerodynamics and also to stiffen the gear and then paint it for looks.

Well if anyone is interested there is also a yellow balance mark on most tubes.
This wasn't mentioned in my Sky^%$# instructions. In any case
yellow marks were 80° off on my tubes from stems and red tire marks.
Maybe everyone knew this but me. To Kitfoxmike, it's funny that when
I got home and read your suggestion about spinning the wheels with a
grinder, that's exactly what I had done that day. Works great!
Thunderstorms and gusts to 30mph. Taxi later. Thanks

Not a problem. I get to change my tires and I'm taking the rims to the tire place and let them do it, I'm going to let them balance as well. I think since I'm going with the king fox tires that I might have troubles after they brake in,so to speak, they generally puff out a little more with use, then I'll probably have to balance again with the grinder trick.

I finally put my new Kingfox tires on yesterday. I took the wheels to a motorcylce shop and let them put them on with doing a balance as well. I have to say It turned out great. No more shimmy on take off, I ran them to 60mph before lift off and no vibration, nice and smooth. I came in for a landing and the tires worked just great on asphalt. Very happy Very Happy

Just to add a little more on the new tires, I went to the classC today and did some touches. Why there? they let me do anything I want, that's why. Well anyway the winds were 250 on runway 21 with 14kts. I was doing my low runway runs where I would use the 150 ft runway 9000 ft long. I did about 20 touches down the runway, first I would touch on center line then I would move to the left and touch on the left side(they have white marks over there, then I would move to the right a little touch on the center then move to the right and touch on the white mark on the right, I did this back and forth all the way down the length of the runway. I tell ya, if you haven't done anything like this, you aught to. You end up staying just inches off the runway, at airspeeds just above stall. Way cool and fun, really test your ability to put the plane anywhere you want to. Broke in the tires real nice. wonder what the tower thought, oh well they expect things like this from me.

That kind of low pass, touches as you say, is great practice and develops
the skill and coordination you need for control in the landing phase.
Especially true when conditions are unfavorable. I wouldn't try it for the
first time in a x-wind though.

I highly agree with that one, I moved myself into extreem landing procedures after many straight down the runway on calm days. It was extremely cool when I went back to my home field and landed on the grass. I wanted a landing as short as possible, problem is on the edge of the approach is a taxi light right in the middle or close to it on the taxi way off the edge. I came in to land right on that edge moved a few inches to the right and landed real short, was stopped within 300ft. way cool. The winds there where 280 at 9 with the runway 21.

I have to say the short wing kitfox 4 is so cool, you don't get much of a cross effect with the short wing. Today I was pretty much level wing when flying off the runway. Back when I had it long wing, forget it, you couldn't do that.
