Several builders have written about using plastic tubes in the wings to carry wiring.  Most have referred to Van's as the source of the tubes.  I have looked at the Van's website and cannit fibd such tubes listed.  Will someone who knows how to do rhis please email me with the part numbers of how to find something on Van's website?

Ladies,

the nylon tubes everyone is refering to is flexible black plastic tubing you can get at the good old local Home Depot or home SHop.   I would say 50% of the 601s being built in the south east use the light wieght black tubing,  just tie wrap it to the frame on the inside, good to go.



Hate to tell  ya, no parts number, just eye ball it.

search funtion, try this info I have from a recent invoice:

Here is the link.  BUT, beware, this stuff is sewer pipe sized and they only offer the one size.  If you do a search of this list for "conduit", you'll find several better alternatives.

I found the Nylon tubing at the local hardware store.  It came in 3 ft pieces and in various lengths.

Robin has it right - DUCT  NT5/8-25.  Just type "nylon" into the search box and it will come up first.  I did find similar stuff at hardware stores, but it is all SPLIT!  I could not find it anywhere uncut.  I would suggest just getting it from Vans.

I doubt that you'd easily find anything as suitable, convenient, and light, 

as the Van's tubing at 25 feet for $9.30. 25 feet seems approriate for two 

wings, and out of curiosity I just weighed my 25' roll at just 10.7 oz.  ID 

is 5/8", but with the convoluted ribs the OD is about 3/4".  And for routing 

purposes it's quite flexible, probably much more so than any non-convoluted 

type, such that it will accomodate a bend of only about one-inch radius..

Good question - nothing probably.  I just didn't want wires coming out.  It would also be harder to thread wires and I'm not sure if it would stay as firmly in the grommets I fed it through, but those are just guesses.  As someone else posted, 25' from Vans for $9 isn't bad.

I’m not building yet so this only a guess. It seems to me that the main reason to use conduit in a wing is to be able to remove, replace or add wires after skin closure. If I were not planning to perform adds, moves or changes to a wire run, I would simply bundle the wires along the properly supported run using either plastic ty-wraps or lacing cord, of course following the guidelines of AC43.13.1B.  

   

If the conduit is the corrugated split loom also used in autos (or similar), one cannot pull out existing wires and re-pull others. The split in the loom will open and make pulling wire a bear to do.  

   

Now, a question you A&P’s out there:  

   

AC43.13.1B, Chapter 11, Aircraft electrical systems, Section 8, Wiring Installation Inspection requirements, Item K states:  

   

“K. Insulating tubing must be kept at a minimum and must be used to protect wire and cable from abrasion, chafing, exposure to fluid and other conditions which could affect the cable installation. However, the use of insulating tubing for support of wires and cables in lieu of stand-offs is prohibited.”  

   

Does that mean that running a tube the length of a wing to support say, wing tip lighting is prohibited? Or does it mean that the conduit must be properly supported along its run.
