I'm looking for some help on my freshly ringed  0-200. The oil temp climbs slowly beyond 200 degrees. This is especially true  when the outside temps are greater than 75 and when the RPMs are over 1800.  There is 15 hours on the engine since new rings and crank, 220 SMOH. The CHT  during climbout goes to 400 or slightly higher and comes down to 325-350 at 1800  RPM. I have Phillips 20W50 oil now, having run straight mineral oil for 7 hours  (the oil pressure was a little low with the 30 weight oil but now is good). I  opened up the front inlets openings(this brought the CHTs down but not the oil  temp), Installed a 'Cool Collar' (w/ fresh air duct on the filter) ,which helped  a little, Removed my bottom cowl flap completely, which helped a little again,  and added a scoop to bring fresh air onto the sump, again this helped a little.  But in 80 degree weather above 1800 it still climbs over 200. My question is, Do  I add an oil cooler now or hope that break-in will bring temps down enough that  I don't need a cooler. The engine is installed in a Zenair 601. I had been told  that I should not need a cooler by numerous people. I have checked the gauge and  it is accurate. Anybody have any advise?

I just discovered this morning that I do not have  the baffles that run along the bottom of the case halves. I did not know that  there were any, but looking at another 0-200 installation, I noticed them. I  will try this next. I do not want to add an oil cooler. My upper baffles are  close fitting and sealed well.

Aaron,

 With my A-65, that I rebuilt under the eye of my AP  mentor, recommended an oil that we use in work. "Terressic #68" which is a pure  mineral oil with viscosity of 20. He had me run that quite a number of  hours.  Then went to the multi vis aircraft oil. I have eyebrows with no  lower baffleing, including no "gull wing" baffle under the gap between the cyl.  bottoms.

 My oil temp guage starts at 120  or 140,  And  only twice in 75 hours of flying has it came off the lower stop.

 Did you break the glaze nicely on the cylinders?  If  not,  you'll get heat , and the engine will always use oil.  I rarely  add oil

 I am using no oil to speak of. Yes the cylinders  were deglazed and I do have the intercylinder baffles(both top and bottom). CHT  is not a problem. I had 30 viscosity(Aeroshell #65) mineral oil in it but  the pressure would drop as it warmed up. That is why I changed to the heavier  oil and the pressure came up nicely. I put in the lower baffles(trough)  yesterday and two 1 1/2" holes in the cowl to feed them, so will test that  as soon as the thunderstorms depart the area. Thanks.
