Neat idea. Anything that I made would probably turn out leaky and drafty though. It would solve a nagging concern that I have about having the flip up canopy depart the aircraft in high winds from the rear. I once tore up a door while exiting after a line boy parked me with a gusty tail wind. Second, If I flipped over, it would be tough to break out without some kind of tool handy. All that said, the type of canopy on Ercoupes, Swifts and P38 lightnings looks like it may have merit and may be lighter than gull wings.

It isn't going to slide very well upside down.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> A thought occurred to me last night, at oh-dark thirty, that may move us forward on canopy variations: How about using a fixed windshield, and a flip-up and-back canopy, such as on the BD-5? Jim Bede used four pivoting struts. We could probably do the same thing with four approximately 18 inch long struts, two at the front of the canopy, and two at roughly the mid-point, and not have to worry about the problems with tapered canopy, smooth sliding, etc. Any thoughts on this?

Paul,
I've been toying with the idea of making a fastback and then installing
a slider. Initial calculations seem to indicate it would need minimal
modifications to the turtledeck bulkheads and some more skin.
Just putting pencil to paper right now.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> It looks good, but you still have to deal with the horizontal taper of the fuselage, not to mention giving up the magnificant 360 degree visibility. But it does look good.
