Anybody have a good (simple would be nice too) way to clean the oil residue off the CJ after flying it?

Here's what I do and I am sure other have different methods.

I have a small garden sprayer with Simple Green Aircraft Cleaner in it.  I spray it on let it sit for a minute and then hose off. 90% of the oil just rinses off.

The last 10% will wipe right off.

If you don't have water at your hangar you can use a larger garden sprayer with water in it.

We buy this stuff by the cases. Actually 'Doc' Kemp came across it at a local Autozone or Advance Auto. Buy one bottle and try it. You won't believe how it cleans everything, including bug residue. Works great on Plexiglas too. I have light blue on the belly of my airplane and all of us know about the oil staining on the bottom of our airplanes. This stuff takes out the ugly stains on the light blue belly of my airplane.

p.s. I like the 17 year old idea better because all you have to do is feet "it" and it will work for nothing.

Nail on the head! When I worked the line (which I think EVERY pilot should do on their career), I helped out some airplane owners and got to fly in some cool airplanes!

T-33
MiG-15UTI
T-6
T-28
CJ-6 (owner was killed in the airplane a few years later)
P-51 (in form with a P-47)

I have fond memories of my time as a lineboy and learned a ton!

Give the local kid a shot at cleaning it....then take him/her up! You will make their day and an ally at the field.

Wax the leading edges really good ( the wings and tail). You can then use plain old water to get the bugs off the wings excluding the section at the root that is oily. Use Bike Clean on those sections to knock the job out in about 10 min from start to finish. Works well on taking the oxidized glaze off the canopy glass also. You can find it in most Autozone or Part Plus auto stores. Some of the motorcycle shops carry it also.

Don’t expect them to get any cheaper either! My son is jumping the pond right now flying for the AF and guess who is taking his truck into the shop for repairs. Guess who will get to pick it up before he gets back also.

Try using a micro-fiber cloth, available at Wally-World etc in their car detailing section. Wet thoroughly, then wring out most of the water, then spray liberally with Lemon Pledge. Wipes off bugs and leaves a bit of wax behind to fend off the next batch. Does a good job on smoke oil residue. Safe on plexiglas, but hit it first before the leading edges. Shake it once in a while to get rid of the crunchy pieces of bugs. Doesn't leave swirl marks. I've carried one for years to clean my Harleys in a zip-loc bag. Cleans windshields, chrome, paint very well. After a few days on a road trip they get kind of rank and a quick rinse in a motel sink gets them fresh and moist again.
