Just got a Kitfox IV Speedster still in the building stages and will be ready for a powerplant in the near future. Originally purchased with the intent of a Rotax from the previous builder, however I find myself leaning towards the VW engine. I've heard there are a couple Kitfox IV's flying with the VW and I would like very much to get some ideas and rough price costs to power a IV. Anyone out there that has a VW IV that I can exchange ideas with? Thanks PMorel

If you go with the VW motor and have the speedster radiator fairing to spare, I would be interested in buying it. Thanks

Paul,
Think "Aerovee." I would love to try that engine. Jeff Classic IV 912UL

No real-world experience with VW in an airplane but I like the looks of the Great Plains VW engine with Nikasil cylinders, water cooled heads, and if you want 120hp, slap on the PSRU.
I have read that the VWs have problems with overheating in warm weather when they try to squeeze 100hp or more out of them, especially in a climb. With the water-cooled heads, this shouldn't be a problem. It would be nice to get some real-world feedback of this set-up in a Kitfox.

Paul,
I too am looking into the AeroVee:
I asked them if their engine would work in a Kitfox Model IV-1200, and this was their reply:

Hello Kent-
Yes, the AeroVee can and has been installed on a Kitfox IV.
Any aircraft provisioned for a direct-drive VW can be made to work with the AeroVee.

Kent/Paul,
With 4000 max rpm, what prop do they use? Probably a
short prop. Make sure most of the prop blows outside
of the KitFox cowl dimensions to get best performance.
