701 builders,

I'm in the process of installing the control stick and pitch control rod, but I'm a little worried about pitch deflection limits. According to some calculations (which may be incorrect), the pitch control rod will need to move forward and aft 120mm to allow the required elevator deflections of 32-35 up to 28-30 degrees down.

There is no way this will happen in my plane. The pitch control rod will bind against the bottom cutout in the seat front, or the control stick will hit the top of the seat front. I filed the bottom cutout in the seat front, but I'm still only getting about 80mm movement. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan Ginty

Hi Dan,

Keep filing away at the bottom lip of the seat support (where the rod is
touching). That oblong hole you made per plans is just a starting point (or
maybe thats a new factory cutout in the new kits?) Once filed, that rod
should move as far back as you would like w/o touching a thing. Hope this
is makes sense. Good luck!

Jon

Dan,

I am getting a max of 140mm of control rod movement (no cables attached to
horn when measured)

Jon,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for better news. It's a real pain trying to file down that seat front AFTER it's riveted to the cabin and tunnel. Mad

I think I'll need to recheck my dimensions. This is a fairly old kit and I did the cutout myself. The way it's looking, I may need to cut it down to the top of 7F11-8, the reinforcement plate. My only fear now is junk getting in that hole under the tunnel during flight.

Thanks again for your help.

Dan

Hi Dan:

I have my tail feathers in place so thought I would go out and measure the "travel" of the elevator control rod for you.

I do have my stabilizer limits set to the factory spec, cables in place, and stick in place and operating.

From stop to stop my control rod moves just under 120mm. When stick is forward, control rod end is almost perfectly even with the front skin of the vertical portion of the seat. When stick is fully back, control rod extends 117-118mm forward. In both extremes my stick does not contact the seat at either position. My clearance, with stick fully back, is about 10mm from touching the seat.

Can take some quick pictures and forward if that would help.

George

Hi George and Jon,

Well, I got tired of filing. It seemed I wasn't going anywhere with it, so I got out my dremel with a cut-off wheel and went medieval on it. I probably took off more than necessary, but I got good freedom of movement. I figured it's pretty important to make sure there's no binding there.

I have the 140mm movement you mentioned Jon. I'm sure once the elevtor is mounted and stops in place I'll be at the 117-118mm range.

Thanks again for your inputs.

Dan

Dan,
What is the length of your pitch control rod?

Seems that's where the amount of travel is also controlled. The plans
call for 665mm but I think that's too much.

I looked at a CZAW built plane last week. The control rod was about 585mm. It didn't touch the seat back nor did the end travel back into the seat front oblong hole.

Well I think this builder's best friend is this list. I hate to think how
many more mistakes I would have made but for things I have learned from
others.

I haven't even cut it to length yet. I simply matched the tube with the bellcrank when both the stick and bellcrank were neutral (vertical). I knew I was in trouble with the seat front clearance just by eyeballing it.

The plans indicate "685mm (check stick neutral)". In my original kit plans dated 1/96, it shows "700mm (cut to fit stick neutral)". I guess the intent is to give you enough material to cut it to the size you want, although that's not really spelled out in the latest drawings.
