Hi Gang,

I have a slide of a NASA Commander taken in December 1968, at "LAT" airport.

This doesn't seem to be a current code.

My memory is saying Los Angeles Air Terminal, but that source of data just cannot be relied upon.

Any 'old -timers' out there who can help?

Very Best Regards,
Barry

Hi Gang,

Ah! Memory recall - a rare event nowadays ;-0

I think "LAT" is Lockheed Air Terminal, at Burbank.

If I'm wrong, no doubt somebody well let me know.

Best Regards,
Barry

Sir Barry,

Can you scan the photo and upload it? I bet one or two of us would actually recognize the field!

Hi Keith,

I've attached a scan of the color slide in question. As you'll see, there isn't much to go on in the way detail in the background.

I'm sure though now that "LAT" is Lockheed Air Terminal and this had its name changed in 1975, to "Burbank Glendale-Pasadena Airport".

Very Best Regards,
Barry

Was it Old Bob, Ancient Aviator, that called it Lockheed Air Terminal?

I grew up down there. From the ridge line and the small hill to the right of the tail, the vegetation (lack of) and smog layer, I'd say it looks like the area for sure.

Not in answer to your LAT question, but at least some trivia about the Lockheed Airport(s) beginnings... go to http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Airfields_CA_SanFernan.htm#lockheedb1 to view these "ghost-airfields" of the day... very cool.

"The Lockheed factory airstrip was in use until about 1941, when the P-38 came out.
The P-38s were towed down Empire Street in the middle of the night to the newly acquired Burbank (Union) Air Terminal,
which was renamed 'Lockheed Air Terminal'".
