I forgot who asked, but I didn't see a reply to the
question about the NSI GB breather.

The person to talk to is Peter Graichen. He has a
good number of mods for his plane pictured on his web
site and I think this breather is there too.

Peter, can you post your web site link again, or at
least the breather pic?

Thanks Peter,

Looks like a simple setup. It looks like oil goes all the way to the reservoir. Is that correct?

OK,
My bad. Should have looked and listened a bit closer. I didn’t realize
it was a different redrive. I will go back to seep now.

FWIW,
I was told by Lance some time ago that the breather is actually detrimental. The mist created in the gear set is beneficial to lubrication. The vent diminishes this from forming. If the seal are good and the unit is not over filled there should be no need for one. I never needed one in 600 hours of operation. Please I don't care to get commentaries on Lance and get off topic. This is my general understanding of the closed reduction system and how it worked for me.

Hi Rick:
As you can see from the pixs I posted, I made a connection from the gearbox bottom drain to a plastic overflow bottle. The tube goes all the way to the bottom of the overflow bottle. The overflow bottle is vented. As the gearbox heats up during operation the internal pressure increases considerably without this vent. This does lead very easily to oil leaks around the seals.
During operation the pressure buildup expells about 5 fluid ounces of oil into the overflow bottle. As the gearbox cools after shut down, it sucks all the oil back into the gearbox. It is basically the same setup as the coolant overflow. As far as oil mist within the gearbox is concerned, I can not see where my setup would make any difference.

Peter,

Since some oil obviously drains out of the gear box and into the tube, do you just try to add enough oil to start with to make the oil level in the gear box and the tube about the same height as the top of the gear box, or do you allow some space there also?

Why is your breather out of the bottom of your redrive instead of the top?

I fill the gearbox with the specified quantity. In my case that is 850 ccm.
