I'm crushed, CRUSHED that Doug considers my "gravity powered lightning hole
press" method as "noise" on the list. The bigger point is that nearly every
builder has these tools (a truck and a hydraulic jack) at their disposal, so
they can accomplish the task with ZERO additional investment. Sure it's
overkill, but you can do it without spending a dime, nor juggling "C" clamps
AND a vise. When you are pressing the lightning holes in a 12' wing spar
web, how handy is that to hold in a bench vise?

I am attaching the pic of my operation for the benefit of the new guys.
This is again, old hat for the list oldtimers who will cringe at viewing it
again, I apologize in advance.

The steel dies shown were used as shown, but they can just as easily be used
in a hydraulic press or other pressing method.

They were made from ZA prints and have been used by several builders so far
with no problems.

Attn: Ron Culver:

Do you have ALL your parts of the project ready for flanging or how long
will you need to keep the dies?

They are currently "in the field" on loan to a 701 builder who has finished
with them and is "waiting instructions" on who to forward them to.

If you are interested, please reply with info. I loan them out to ZA
builders on this list for shipping only. I prefer that they not stay with a
builder for years, but months is certainly not a problem.

I lent them to a 601 builder who had a problem with one of the dies. One of
the holes requiring flanging on a 601 is within a channel, so that
particular die needs to be altered (edges trimmed) to fit within the
channel. If they ever arrive "home", I will do this conversion to work with
the 601. As they are now, they do everything required on a 701.

I sincerely apologize if anyone took offense at my "noise" comment. I meant it in a "tongue-in-cheek" fashion, but thats the problem with these groups, inflections don't get put on the screen.

If the gravity press works for you, by all means use it. I tried it, but only managed to split a set of dies made of oak. It was this experience that lead me to the plywood solution. And you do have to admit, it IS overkill. I quickly realized that the effort to spin a vise handle is miniscule compared to getting out the floor jack, etc.

The point I WAS trying to make is that the amount of pressure required is actually very low; not at all what I had initially imagined when talk of hydraulic presses and car weights were put out here.

Point well taken Doug. I agree that it is unfortunate that we dont have
emoticons so that we can put smilies where appropriate. It would prevent a
lot of misunderstandings.This is such a fine group of very helpful people it
is sad that occasionally feelings are unintentionally hurt. Thanks all who
have replied about the dies. I now have some about to be shipped and
couldn't be more pleased.

I don't know why you're apologizing, I've seen no reference to anyone being

Nice looking dies. They look just like the one's I'm using. To do the squash I just put a big 3/4 inch bolt through the center and torqued down. Why the need for the car? A big bolt works just fine.

Home Depot all thread 3/4 inch, $9. Two 3/4 inch nuts, about $1.50 each.

My oh my guys. I know this is all in a good natured banter but can't we let
it die a natural death. I don't mind but it keeps referring to ATTN:Ron
Culver. Actually I am one of those "if it works that is all that is
required" and "live and let live". I personally care not how but If ..
