Awhile back there was a thread about flying over the Rockies from east to
west, to get to someplace like Portland. I have misplaced that series of
emails. I'm about to fly from NC to Portland and would like to revisit that
discussion. I believe someone said to just follow I-80 or I-90 or something
similar. Any specific route planning would be helpful as a starting point,
thanks.

That would be me that you are asking about. I suggested that one of ht epossible routes, especially for someone that does not know the rockies, is to fly along I-80 through Wyoming, then follow I-84 through Idaho and Oregon to Portland. You will see lots of great countryside and still have lots of places to land , fuel up and stop overnight.. if you would like more info drop me a line.

I had a note or two on that thread. My wife and I took our elderly
Bonanza from Minneapolis to Seattle two years ago, with a two day
stop in Ft. Collins, CO to visit friends. From Ft. Collins we headed
NW and intercepted I-90 somewhere in Wyoming. Following I-90 was a
fairly straight shot and gave us plenty of fuel stops and gorgeous
scenery. As I recall, the highest pass on that route was less than
7000 feet. I got a mountain flying book and studied it, and picked
the brains of some friends who are experienced mountain flyers. I
know there are some good courses available. I am a pretty experienced
IFR flyer, but decided that this was going to be pretty much a VFR
trip while over the Rockies. The MEA's were pretty high and even
though we did have supplemental O2, I just would not have been
comfortable with IFR. I did get radar flight following from ATC for
most of the trip. We lucked out and had beautiful weather both ways,
so it was never an issue except for our arrival into Seattle. No low
IFR, but did fly in the clouds a bit on that end. I was pretty
cautious and never felt uncomfortable. It was a great trip, and we
look forward to repeating it in our RV-10. Go for it and have a blast!

I have had good experiences at every airport I have used in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Northern CO and Southern WY.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

However, I usually stop at Greely KGXY, restraint and SS gas, Clinb up toLarime KLAR cross WY to Rock Springs KRKS, Coss the Mountains, terrain 9,000, to Bear Lake 1U7 or lower terrain at Evanston, North to Soda Springs U78. From there through the pass west over Bancroft U51 to Blackfoot U02 or continue North to Idaho Falls KIDA. The pass at Pocatello KPIH has a dog leg I prefer not to fly.

I recommend going on north toe Driggs KDIJ for lunch. Then flying over KAOC will place you over Crater’s of The Moon as You fly by the entrance to Sun Valley.

Twin Falls and Nampa also has a cafeteria.
