Pat,Here's from Avweb:
"NTSB Update on P-51 Mustang Collision
copyright © Larry Grace

In a press briefing Saturday afternoon, NTSB air safety inspector Jim Silliman said the Safety Board is still very much in the investigation stage of Friday afternoon's accident involving two P-51 Mustangs participating in the showcase flights at EAA AirVenture. EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski said Gerald Beck, 58, of Wahpeton, N.D., was killed in the fiery crash and Casey Odegaard, 24, of Kindred, N.D., suffered only minor injuries. Silliman said both airplanes were landing on Runway 36L at Oshkosh Wittman Regional Airport when Beck's P-51A hit Odegaard's P-51D from behind before flipping over and catching fire.
As expected, several airshow watchers caught the accident on camera or video camcorders, and Silliman said the NTSB is now reviewing a video and several photos submitted to investigators. He said the Safety Board will issue a preliminary report soon, followed by a factual report in about 12 months."
I don't know the tail nos, but I read somewhere that the P51A was built by the pilot!

Gerry was a living legend in eyes. I knew him and this is really sad. I could not be at OSH this year but I made it back to Fargo Tuesday and his funeral was held at the Fargo Air Museum and there were hundreds of friends there. His casket was a “propeller case” and it was set under the wing of one of his favorites (corsair) and next to his TBM Avenger.

Gerry actually built the P51A from scratch that he died in. There were no “A” models to restore so he built one. He had a set of plans he acquired from an engineer at North American that he used. Every part was fabricated. The plane was a masterpiece of craftsmanship, incredible to walk around. It makes my Kolb look like a kindergarten project. He flew it last year in a film to be released about air racing produced by his friend.

Gerry was a real aviation enthusiast. I loved hanging around him listening to him discuss his work. The P51 was just one of his collection, he just about filled the Air Museum in Fargo with his planes.

Gerry was one of those guys who just looked like an “average Joe” and would take time to talk if it had anything to do with flying, but would have thought the gathering Tuesday for his funeral was a huge waste of peoples time.

Casey was flying “Stang”, a beautiful P51 restored by his dad Bob who was also best friends with Gerry. These guys regularly fly into Fargo and these incredible planes are often overnight hanger mates with my C340.

I was out east last week and watching the news, I was shocked when I knew both of these pilots. I stopped overnight at OSH on my way home and sat out on the ramp Tuesday morning remembering Gerry. It was sad to see his friend Bobs red & white Corsair sitting on the adjacent ramp knowing why it was left behind.

Not really Kolb but a follow up to the earlier post:

I went to the move premiere of Thunder over Reno. One of the stars of the movie was a P-51a "Precious Metal 2". This is the plane that Gerry Beck built and was killed in at OSH 2007.

The movie is really good. The story is "cute" (per my wife) but the flying scenes are terrific!. My wife liked it a lot and I thought she would hate it (but remember, the story is cute).

The camera work during the flying is incredible, some of the shots of crop-dusting make you rock in your seat. The racing shots are exciting and focus on the Gold racers. The stars are the planes!

Gerry Beck has a role in it too during one of the scenes. He the mechanic is warming up the 51a when it develops a cooling system leak.

The Red/White Super Corsair 57 was in the film too and also was in front of the theater for the evening shows. Bob Odegaard was there with his kids (all in the film) plus the other actors. It was fun.

I wish I could have a picture of the street Saturday night. There was also another local P51c (in the movie too) on Broadway. Stang is being repaired from the accident at OSH (but does star in the movie).

I do not know when the film will be released for distribution. It was filmed in 2006. Watch for it, it is a good movie.

The sad part of the night was both Gerry and the 51a was missing. The film is dedicated to Gerry Beck.

Speaking of Mustangs; check out: http://www.gml2007.com/

If you can't make TNK Fly-in and live near Columbus, Ohio; check out the Mustang fly-in.

Unfortunately, I have another commitment so I won't be able to make either.

Rex
