Hello, all
Any recommendations on the order of riveting the wing skins?
The old CH601-HD manual says the top skin should go first, so you can adjust any imperfections from underneath, before installing the bottom skin.
All input welcome, particularly from -HD and -HDS builders.
Thanks in advance
Carlos

I'm pretty sure I did the bottom first but even looking at the photos on my web site I can't swear to it.

Hi Carlos, I am building a 601HD from plans. Do not think it will make much difference which one is installed first but I did the bottom first. No problems. But let me suggest you check the "L" angles for the main gear slides location before you close the center section using the 3/4" steel tubes. I used 3/4 wood and had a little problem when I started to install the gears, "L" angles too close and had to file them -hard-. Also had a little problem aligning the gear tube in the bushings. Regarding closing the wing, I can't offer any suggestion beyond the 601HD
manual which suggests riveting top skin first. But I can offer my
experience as follows. I riveted the top of wing first, then riveted the
bottom skin as suggested in the manual but did not rivet the aileron (rear
edge of skin). Now I find a slight ripple in the top skin along the rear
edge when I try to attach the aileron to the wing. I am planning to remove
most of the rivets in top skin and resecure with clecos to ensure alignment
before final riveting. Perhaps I should have clecoed the entire top skin,
riveted all but the rear rivet line, and left the clecos in the rear rivet
line until the bottom skin was riveted, then rivet the rear top skin rivet
line when ready to install the aileron.
Hope this is not too confusing.

Hi Peter,
I'd recommend you place the wing forward of the area you assemble the
aileron so that you can trim to fit progressively.
The ends of the wing and clearance for movement are otherwise difficult
to match up. Drawings alone sometimes don't quite do it.

Hi Carlos,
I just closed the bottom of my left HDS wing. The reason to do this against the advice of the manual was the need to stow away both wings. I found it easier to place them securely on their finished bottoms. I can't close them fully since they have to wait for inspection.
Second: I need to get the wings off the table before I can start on the ailerons. To align them properly might be easier with the top skin still accessable.
btw: I also have to do the wing locker doors. Yours look really great, I played around with the idea of having these nice fasteners...as always you're way ahead of me... [Laughing]

Larry,
thanks for this tip, I didn't think about it
What really amazes me all the time :
how in the world do you always have the correct pictures at hand in the correct stage of build [Shocked]
Did you wear a camera helmet during your building hours or what [Laughing]
I really try to keep visual evidence track on my building but I am far away from you yet...let alone finding the right pics again....

Hi Peter,
|
As a designer from weapons, structural systems and material handling,
the 601 was one of the best projects I've ever been involved in.
My web site only repeats what I'd found so useful on other Zenith
builder sites and it nearly got out of hand. Pleased you find my site a
worthwhile visit.
There are lots of things I've tried to improve in there that make
handling, transport, weight & balance, etc., easier, but the credit goes
to Chris Heintz
for providing the momentum of such a great light plane.
This plane is such a joy to fly!
Take care,
Larry McFarland

Larry,
your macsmachines website has been a great help to my project this past year. I used your idea of the screw on Panel top and its proved a good choice. Thank you for your website.
