Sorry David, this is not true. The FAA requires you take a pre-solo written exam, not the FAA Private Pilots written. For verification go to the FAR's. Every pilot should own a set of regulations not only for knowledge but to insure he / she is legal. If you don't want to purchase the FAR's they are available on many sites for free on the internet.

I corrected that in the next email. I meant to state that most flying schools insurance require it but the FAA recommends it.
