Cheers,
I'm still searching for that elusive device - in an attempt to avoid
the cost of an ampere or two of contactor current - which will control a
primary battery source and another for secondary battery source.
I have found several which meet one criterion or another, but not
all:
[a] should carry as much current as a contactor for that job;
[b] needs to be an up-down rather than rotary type switch;
[c] should be on a remote(able) stalk so I can undo the connection to
remove the instrument panel ;
[d] cost less than the usual contactor - or at least be competitive.
I have devised a system to isolate the controls from wandering
fingers so am not fussy about security. I'm not sure what a "Kill switch" is
really.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Fergus,

I use a solid state contactor, the EV200 which meets some of your
criteria. It can handle 500A (enough to start a cold 914 or even a 912s),
has a hold current of 0.125. It is not cheap however at $90, but it is
less weight on the firewall.

The EV200 http://www.allproducts.com/manufacture97/szshanghe/product4.html
looks suspiciously like a conventional mechanical relay/contactor. Here's a
solid state relay:

necessary to enlarge the picture to read the rating on this device (25A).

Indeed, it is a mechanical contactor, and it is not light either.
I installed two of them in our dual battery project. No problem with the
contactors themselves, but I suspect their command circuit sends some
perturbation in the ship's circuit, and I experienced some problems with
my low voltage warning module.

OK, the EV200 has mechanical contacts, but a) there is nothing inherently
wrong with mechanical contacts, and b) the hold current is, as I said
1/8 or less than that of a conventional solenoids.

Giles, I have a Nuckolls, LVBM circuit in my plane and have not noted
any interaction. Why do you suspect the EV200?

That's why I chose these contactors.

Rob,

The solid state relay you point to has a max current rating of 25A.
This is about 1/4 that needed to function as a true master contactor
and handle starting load for the engine.

Hi Ferg,

I used an EV200 in my Europa and it worked fine until I had my "hit by
lighting" incident. It turned the electronics into a small charred spec and
obviously didn't work anymore. Of course this left me flying at 9500' with
the master contactor turned off. Fortunately I have my system set up with
an essential buss that can be feed directly for the battery. I guess it was
some real world testing.

Anyhow, as part of my repairs while I was "on the road" so to speak I
installed a contactor from a NAPA auto parts store for $16.50 and there it
has stayed from that day to this. It was smaller and lighter than the EV200
and it didn't cost $90... I assume that if I get hit by lightning again
(perish the thought) then it will probably continue to work.

I did try a solid state 1600A device for a while. It worked fine until the
engine kicked back and it went the same way as the EV200 electronics. Pity
really because it only weighed a few ounces and I didn't have to pay a one
amp penalty when it was energized.

So, in conclusion, go down to the local NAPA store and by a low tech
contactor or a battery isolator switch, sometimes simple is best.

Dear Ferg

here is my solution.

I divided the electrical consumption in two as follows:

1) starter, trimming devices, stall warning, gear warning,
door warnings, clock, Dynon back-upp charger, burglary-alarm etc.

This is handled by full mechanic main-swithch
which is installed over the glove shelf (it does not
prevent removing the panel, it is light weight, cheap
and solid and it is operated w/o el pwr).
The switch is about similar somebody has installed
to the co-pilot´s head rest in the case his accu is in the back.
Price was about 15 euros.

2) all the rest is handled by small automotive type relay

using about 30 mA. It handles 40A which is enough for me.
I use it by "master switch" in my panel´s left side.
Price was about 5 euros.

- normally # 1 is always open and # 2 is closed
(trim CB must open also separately!).

- when flying both are closed (ON) of course.

- in the case of emergency landing I open # 2 and
leave # 1 closed - so I am still able to start, use trim
and have all the warnings I am used to (and clock is in time!)

- during long (more than two weeks) staying period I open (OFF) both

This was simple, cheap, lightweight, prctical and safe solution for my purposes.
