Good Morning George:
A gas refrigerator can withstand the pitching and rolling of an RV down the highway, but, as you mentioned, they have to be returned to 'straight & level' to work properly. I really like the idea of using exhaust gases for an energy source, but I fear the toxicity of the ammonia and the turbulence of flight would make this system unworkable.
Great idea - I really wish it could work.

[quote] I've wondered about this, remembering that 50 some years ago I saw refrigerators that used a small gas flame as an energy source. We throw away a lot of heat in exhaust gases, so that could be an energy source. I Googled "Servel", the manufacturer of such refrigerators and learned that the refrigerant flow depends entirely on gravity. I wonder if turbulence would disrupt the refrigerant circulation?. Anyone done any research on concept?

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Kindasorta, yes. About 15 years ago, somebody came up with a dry air conditioner/heater, using the compression and expansion of air. It looked something like a two-rotor, lobed, Roots supercharger. Run in one direction, it compressed the air, ran it through a heat exchanger, then through a calibrated orifice, which gave cooled air. Run in the other direction, it used the heat of compression as a sort of heater. Or something like that. After the first flurry of interest, nothing much was ever heard of it again. It's probably one of those things that works, but for reasons of cost, complexity, or whatever, doesn't get to the marketplace.

If an airplane was designed from scratch to incorporate such a system, space (and weight) ahead of the firewall could be dedicated to the air conditioner, just like it is now to cabin heat. That would solve the toxicity problem and keep it close to the hot exhaust for an energy source. I don't see how we could comfortably handle it in a 601 or 701.

Actually that is what the C-130 uses for air
conditioning. However it didn't work good in Viet
Nam, but once you to got to 20,000 ft it worked really
well.
