Hi, Mike,

This posting of yours really has kicked me to come out from my lurking
status here on the list. Is that guy Kelly Meiste for real?

A good 20 years ago a man named Morgan Huntington made all the rage
throughout the Aviation press with an invention he named the "Lift Reserve
Indicator". When I began planning for the Kitfox I started to build in 1994
I closely studied that device because local regulations in my country insist
on even homebuilt airplanes be equipped with a stall detector.

At that time Mr. Huntington was an elderly gentleman already, living
somewhere in California if I remember correctly. I even contacted him
personally and we had several cordial and highly educational exchanges of
letters back and forth on various aspects of his gadget. Eventually however
I changed my plans and did not purchase from him. Since then I have lost any
contact with him, and I honestly doubt he could still be alive.

On reading your posting I did a quick Google search and after just a few
attempts I came up with this Web site:

http://www.liftreserve.com/

These people, located in Ohio, seem to be building and selling the true
thing - just have a look at their prices! As far as I get the impression it
must be a fairly new enterprise as their site seems still in construction.
The material displayed, however, is the entire bunch of articles,
references, discussions, and even drawings, from good old Mr. Huntington's
place.

I would hate to hurt anyone's feelings....... but I can't refrain from
having some slight doubts here!

Let's wait a few days and see if anyone else in the Kitfox crowd chimes in!

King reards to y'all on the List,

Johannes

Ok you guys,
I am trying to get some work done, and you keep writing stuff…. First Johannes comes on line, well that is distracting as he (you) are a friendly face from the past. Then, as if to reach through the screen and slap me, John, starts writing about his flight… well…….. I have been half-afraid to fly my beast, because of the wind damage last month, but that does it. I am going to fly 50 miles north and leave a bag of dog poop on john’s ramp in from of his hangar.. J
Great story John, thanks.
Johannes, it really is good to hear your “voice”again, how is your lovely wife?

Hi, John,

There's truly "no new thing under the sun". Yes, one only has to utter a mere beep and BANG back come the real good, old friends again! Smile

Just to appease y'all let me tell you that though it's been almost a decade now that I'm walking instead of flying I still haven't had the heart to cancel my subscription to the List. And yes, I still read at least ALL of the headlines, and I can assure you there's still a lot of interesting things for me worth the time to actually read it!

As to your particularly specified question, John,..... well, she's charming as ever, she hasn't got rid of me yet, and we're still in love just as much as back then if not more. Her artistic skills are progressing in a lovely way, and if you want to see what she's doing currently why not come and look her up here:

www.edel-czernin.at

You will notice that specifically for you we've provided an English language section parallel to the internationally totally uncomprehensible German one! Smile

Kind regards to all of you,

Johannes

Johannes, et al,

How nice to hear from a voice from the past! Everything you mentioned about Morgan Huntington is very true. When I met him back in the 80's, I was an engineer in the Cockpit Technology Office at FAA HQ and he was an old guy with an invention he was trying to sell (by having the FAA mandate that it be in all aircraft.) The flight standards folks had sent him to me because they probably did not want to deal with him. Morgan was very nice and I might add, quite competent. We went to Lee Airport in Annapolis where he had a Cessna 150 equipped with his device. We took off and he kept that mush indicator, as he called it, right on the hairy edge of a stall. That old 150 must have had a 20+degree deck angle and was climbing right on out. When we got to a couple of thousand feet he let that needle get in the red and the wing stalled as advertised. Lower the nose and keep the needle out of the red and she flew right out and continued to climb.  Okay, his device worked. But, the FAA was never going to mandate it.  I sent Morgan to some friends I had at NASA's at Langley Research Center.  Bottom line, they put on an old 737 and sure enough, it worked there to. That was pretty much all I ever heard about the LRI until about 10 years ago at Oshkosh. Seems Morgan had passed, but his family, I believe it was a son, continued selling the device, but ran into a legal issue with another fellow selling the same product under a different name. They were in competition, but I never did hear the results of the legal fray. When I told Morgan's son about my experience with his Dad, he was really moved.  He gave me a system and I have it installed in my Kitfox. Now,if I can just finish building the plane, I can find out if it works on the very sophisticated Kitfox V.

I have it installed on my Kitfox 5, but have never completed my fly off time and I am now installing a Jabiru 3300 engine. Therefore I have never gotten around to setting it up. The interesting thing is that last month at Oshkosh I came upon a booth where they were selling the Lift Reserve Indicator. It is the same unit I have and the company is InAir Instruments LLC of Westerville, Ohio. The Internet site is www.liftreserve.com. The owner is Al Mojzisik. I have his business card with all the information, but I am sure it is available on the Internet site.

just so everybody knows, I love this product, I plan on calling and finding out how much. I want it on my RV. Makes more sense than the AOA if it does what it says it will, I just plain like it.

I have the one from Morgan, but I also have the electronic display version. You can see them at LRIAOA.COM I'm not sure what the price is.

Hey, y'all, if you want to spend $450 for one of these things, you can. But
if you want to spend $175 plus shipping, contact Kelly Meiste. It is the
same thing.

Old Morgan Huntington had a great idea. It is too bad that he was not able
to gain better acceptance of his great instrument. Actually it gives about
the same info as the AOA instruments on all military and commercial planes.
GA is slow to catch on. I like this design because it requires no
electrical power (less to go wrong!) and If you lose your airspeed
indicator, you can fly fine with just this. It is a great instrument and
can give you great confidence in turns etc. The great thing is it still
works no matter what your loading, bank angle etc is.
