Folks,
Nick and I have been talking about an open house for some time now with our goal to have it during the month of September. Scheduling conflicts have been the biggest problem.
The best (and seems to be the only) date is the weekend of the 21-23 September. I know you only have 30 days to plan but I would like to get an idea if enough people would be able to make it during this particular weekend. Unfortunately we can’t have a rain date (for those flying in) because the last weekend in September and all weekends in October have events that Pete, Nick or myself are involved in.
Here’s a loose schedule:

Friday afternoon – meet and greet, take a look around the hangar.
Friday evening – dinner (Bell Buckle Café)
Saturday morning – fly out breakfast (I believe it’s at Moontown – nice little grass strip!)
Saturday afternoon – spot landing contest??

Talks/seminars:
Test flying your homebuilt – Buz Rich
Earl Furgeson’s record setting cross country flight – Earl Furgeson
Development of the Lightning – Nick Otterback/Pete Krotje
Possible leaks of classified information from the Lightning Skunk Works
We’re open to any suggestions or requests. If you’d like to do something, learn about something or see something let us know and if we can do it we will. I’d like this to be an event for everyone - owners, builders and possible future owners.
Please let us know if you’re able to attend so we can start making arrangements.
Have a great day!
Mark Stauffer

Mark,
I'll be there "rain or shine". As you said, hopefully all current Lightning builders and flyers, and certainly any others hoping to learn more about the Lightning, its development, the building process, and all the other words "straight from the horse's mouth" (that would be Arion) will be there. Great opportunity. Thanks, guys.
Blue Skies,
Buz

I have been planning to visit in September as the next step in the purchase evaluation. It sounds like this would be the perfect opportunity.

If it goes ahead, I will be there.

Let us know as soon as the dates are confirmed, as some of us will be flying commercial! Smile

All,
As a reminder, Mark need to hear from everyone as to whether you will be attending the Lightning get together 21 to 23 September. The Shelbyville team needs some numbers for event planning purposes. So far, I only have seen Colin, Tex and me respond to Mark's request. Well, I am sure Earl will be there as well since he is giving a presentation on his world record flight. So please, if you are a Lightning customer, a Lightning fan, a Lightning information needy person, or someone that has just always wanted to visit Shelbyville and meet the famous Lightning team members, please plan on attending. I guarantee you will have a great time and you might even get a chance to fly in one of these fantastic airplanes.
Blue Skies,
Buz

PS: Shelbyville is the home of the world famous Tennessee Walking horses. It is also the home of Arion, and it is definitely not a "walking" horse.

I am again confirming my attendance.

Personally I would prefer to spend the whole time looking at and talking about Lightnings, rather than visiting the Beech museum.

Unfortunately, I can’t make it. I am really bummed as this is just what the Lightning community needs to keep the fires going.

If I were going….

I would also want to focus solely on the Lightning and the Jabiru 3300. Perhaps a high level walk through, (very high level) of the build sequence, followed by something relating to the 3300, (break-in procedure, mounting, or tips for success, cooling, etc…). I also think that since so many lightning builders are nearing completion; something along the lines of the flight manual, and procedures for flying off the hours. And Earl’s presentation is a nice touch too.

Of course, a little R/C hover time would be nice too… (grin)

Jim!

Jim,
We will miss having you there. Your above suggestion is just what my presentation is about. I have divided the 40 hour "FAA phase one" test period into five phases and the presentation goes over each phase with specific mission elements for each. It is something I have developed, refined, and updated over many years as I have now made the initial flight on seven different experimental aircraft. Pete, Nick and Mark will cover the history of the Lightning and all the current information on building it, and the future possibilities that may see the light of day from the skunk works. All attendees will have a chance to make suggestions as to future skunk work developments once the "beer light" is illuminated.
The suggestion for a visit to the Staggerwing/Bonanza Museum was just that, a suggestion. Some attendees with flying Lightnings might not want to attend presentations on test flying or building the Lightning since they have "been there, done that". and they might want to have some other possibilities.
Blue Skies,
Buz

That’s great Buz; man, I wish I could get out of my family commitment! I would love to hear about the history too, but maybe I can talk Pete into a brief when I come down for a Jabiru engine seminar.

Nothing wrong with suggestions tho, good thoughts!.

Jim!

ALL,

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the open house. Tucson is a long way from Shelbyville, and my plane will not be flying until around year end. I am sorry I must miss this opportunity to rub elbows with other Lightning builders, but I will be with you in spirit.

Regards,
Jerry Van Heeswyk

From the Green Landings crew, Doug Koenigsberg and Jay Sweitzer will be in Nashville on some other business over that weekend, so will be around Friday afternoon & Saturday.

Ryan and perhaps another person will fly their Lightning in from West Virginia, weather permitting, on Friday afternoon.

Doug
