Rick nailed it. Yes, a MlII Classic doing its best imitation of an Xtra.
Rick wins a cupie doll.

This my MkIIIC well on its way to being converted to an imitation Xtra.

Some history: Our good chap Pat Ladd (of British persuation) crunched
his MkIIIX into a building, messing up the frame at the left wing mount. He
replaced his frame, and gave his old frame to John Brown. John was kind
enough to take precise measurements and photos of this stripped down frame
(the lower portion of the frame was NOT affected at all by the accident,
only the wing mount area).

I then proceeded to cut away virtually ALL of the frame from the hips
forward. Virtually NOTHING is interchangable between the two, MkIIIC to
MkIIIX. Angles are different, dimensions are different. Actually, nothing
is the same. But, with essentially a set of plans I reconstructed the
entire front end, including adjustable rudder pedals, elevator trim, etc. I
then made the NEW side swinging doors. The front end where the nosecone
mounts came out so EXACT, that I could have used a stock nosecone!! Wished
I had, too. I fabricated the nosecone that you see, and it was a Lot of
work!! (But, seeing as how I am between careers, I have more time than
money.)

Now, I know it is NOT a true Xtra. But, when I am finished you'd be hard
pressed to tell the difference!!! There WILL be subtle differences, but
they will be just that, subtle!! I got my chrome moly tubing from A/C
Spruce, used oxy/acetelene & TIG for the welds, and shaped the nosecone from
urathane carving foam, and then glassed over the final shape.

Left to go: A) I have to finish the nosecone fiberglass.
B) Finsih the doors, to contour to new widened shoulder
posts. At first, I was going to leave this place alone, but a true Xtra is
quite a bit different here(than a M3C), so I decided to come closer to the
Xtra shape even at this location. I am leaving the original posts, for
strength, and adding a couple of tubes for a more modern appearance.
C) Clean and prep the fuselage, and then repaint the
fuselage. And then recover the new frame.

At this point, I would say I am about 90% finished toward the MkIIIC to
MkIIIX conversion. The frame portion is virtually completed. Brakes
reserviors, and pedals installed, rudder and trim linkages hooked up, doors
done, except for minor change,

Oh, and I decided to stay with my DOOR MOUNTED THROTTLE, similar to what I
had before the changes.

This may not be for you, but I am doing it MY way~~~!!! Mike
in SW Utah

PS. Little pieces of yellow string indicate a fully welded, inspected
joint. Kind of like a checklist....after inspecting a joint, and it looks
good, it gets string. If it doesn't have string, I can't verify it is
finished, yet!

My plane is "Miss Lucky Stars" , because , When I'm flying
