Need to replace a gas cap gasket on one of my wing tanks, I went to the
local auto parts store and they have a two types of material in a role one
is cork with a rubber base and the other is rubber based but kinda like hard
card board. The guy also said you could use an old inner tube! Does anyone
have any advise?

Ray:
Someone on the list told me couple of years ago that a replacement gasket
for a particular model Mercedes auto fit perfectly, and it did. I can't
remember which model it was, but perhaps you could use the Matronics search
engine and find it, and if not, hopefully a list member can provide you with
that information. If not, I'm pretty sure I saved the box my gaskets came
in for future reference, but it would be some twenty miles away where my Fox
is hangared, and not immediately available.

John and Debra McBean have the gaskets that you need. The shipping
costs more than the gaskets, as I recall. : )

Mercedes Benz # 140-471-00-79 appears to still be available on-line
at a variety of auto parts stores. Just Google "Mercedes
140-471-00-79" and you'll get a few hits to work from. ($2.27 at
www.importpartsspec.com) These have been recommended for the last
seven years in the archives so I think their longevity is probably
satisfactory. (I've only been using them for a year.)

Anyone interested I have two new SS factory fuel tank caps, powder
coated red, with small flare on inlets to aid in fuel delivery. 40.00
for the pair plus UPS ground shipping.

Ray,
Viton rubber has "A-Excellent" resistance to leaded and unleaded gasoline
according to Cole-Parmer's chemical resistance guide. I found it
in McMaster-Carr in 1/32" and 1/16" sheets as small as 4" wide and
cut to any length you want. You may find a supplier you prefer. Good
luck.
