Can anyone tell me what the advantages/disadvantages of slip-jointed exhaust for a CJ are? What about SS exhaust that is made with the same joint configuration as the stock exhaust?

Slip Joint:
The slip joint exhaust have some pluses, they are pretty heavy duty, and they do have less joint leak problems than the stock clamp/gasket exhaust systems. The down side is two fold though, first they are pretty much all "one off" systems, meaning that they are each hand made as you order them (not jig made) and if you have a problem and need a replacement piece your only option is to send the entire system back to the maker and have him hand fit the replacement pipe. However, they are so heavy duty I doubt they would ever burn out so the only reason for a problem would be damage from a accident (gear up or what ever). The second is (last time I checked) no cabin heat muff available. This may have changed by now but I have a hunch that it will push the system cost up considerably. Last time I looked a slip joint system with a cabin heat muff was pushing 3K.
Clamp joint:
The clamp joint (stock) exhaust systems for the 285 hp engines are available in stainless steel. All parts are 100% interchangeable with the "black steel" stock systems. This works well for those who don't want to invest in a total system. On the 285 hp exhaust systems the failure mode it normally lower left pipe, then the lower right, then the upper left. The balance of the system lasts a very long time. By changing out these three pipes and with simple clamp/gasket maintenance on the balance of the system you can extend the life of your stock system hundreds of hours. The investment is small when you can replace the sections as they fail, one at a time. While this system does not have a cabin heat muff either it is possible to add a Yak 52 or a Yak 18T heat muff to the system. To do this you must do some welding and fitting while the exhaust is on your engine, but yes Paul it is doable.
About burn out:
I have never heard of ANY stainless steel exhaust (from any manufacturer) burning out. I am sure that in time this will happen but we have not seen it yet.
About fit:
A stainless steel Yak 18T system (for M14P) will fit the 285 perfectly, EXCEPT the exhaust nuts are slightly larger in dia. and must be changed (I have done many of these). The outlet portion of 18T exhaust also comes out in the correct position and fits the openings in the CJ6 loser cowl perfectly. A Yak 52 system (M14P) is not so easy to use because besides changing the nuts, the lower pipes come out in a slightly different position and if used will require a bit of butchery on the lower cowl. The installation of a Yak 18T exhaust system on a 285 hp CJ is in my opinion the best of the best for three reasons. First the Russian clamp system is better than the Chinese clamp system, second it is stainless, and third it has a killer two position (fresh or heated air) cabin heat muff which will go along way to solving the CO in the cockpit problems when coupled with an additional gill mounted blast tube to feed the system.
About the 285 hp ss systems:
Of my last 6 stainless steel exhaust systems received from China 3 had fit problems on the right hand lower pipe. I was lucky and after 6 months of fighting them (and because I buy a lot of stuff) they finally sent me replacement pipes, now I check every set for fit before shipping. This is one of the risks your run when buying from a foreign country, once the sale is done and they have your money it's sometimes hard to get them to help out with a problem. Also, there seems to now be two makers of these systems in China, one is using black steel exhaust nuts, the other is using stainless steel exhaust nuts.
In stock now are all the clamps/ gaskets and seals as well as stainless steel pipes and complete systems for the 285 hp engine. I have some Yak 18T systems being shipped in about 30 days..

Did mine on the 52 for less than 2.4K withe heat muff. Very happy CO down considerably.

How about using the fabric wrap the racers use to help cut down on escaping gasses??
