Doug- That would be neat to have an old warbird jet
like that but it comes down to four issues on one of
those: 1.) Huge fuel burn 2.) Maintenance and parts
(if available) very expensive 3.) Safety- how safe is
a thirty year old jet gonna be. 4.) Insurability

I just checked the Nemesis website and they say you
can complete one for about 275 on the low end.
(Probably takes 5 years to do). If you do a lot of
flying, that is a pretty reasonable price given the
speed and relatively low fuel burn given the speed.

My problem with the Nemesis is the tail wheel and the
huge amount of runway it eats on takeoff and landing,
making you limited to where you can go. But it sure
would be a thrill to go that fast and ride in
something that is a truly flying artwork.

and fuel efficency of a single. The only thing you
don't get is a whole airframe parachute which
everyone
seems to want nowadays. If I had to sell my condo
which I bought cheap and now has gone up nicely and
virtually live on the street to have the Nemesis,
it
might beat having a roof over my head.

All,
Again, the plane is the NXT (prounounced Next). The first was the
Nemesis NXT b/c all the owners raceplanes are called Nemesis. If you and I
buy one it is just called an NXT. These planes were not built for a normal
kitbuilder to buy and build. They were designed for one thing in mind, to
RACE! The majority of these planes will never even have a second person on
board. The relatively long landing roll and takeoff roll is deemed
exceptable for racing. Heck, one Lancair with about 700 ponies up front has
the right seat as a fuel tank, water tank, methanol tank - for
water/methanol injection, two extra high capacity fuel pumps, the whole
airframe has been reprofiled to reduce drag and the flaps are sealed up for
a little less drag. It turns 370mph lap speeds average which means about
390mph on the straights. You have to wear an 02 mask b/c of carbon monoxide
levels in the cockpit. Kevin who races "Relentless" NXT turned 337mph over
the Airventure course. That was with a stock TIO-540. There's another NXT
that will have a 780(?) cubic inch GTISO engine. There's also one that has
been split and made into a one seater with extended fuselage and a 12

reason why the NXT are for sale as a kit is to meet the rules of the sport
class which require 5 complete kits before you can race. Kevin will be
racing this week and I'll post the results, but he has upgraded to a rumored
500-600hp custom engine. We'll see what the airframe is really capable of.

My point is that that type of plane was never meant for the everyday
builder/flyer. I wouldn't be scared of it, but just think it's an
impractical aircraft if you're looking for a cross country flier. It was
designed with a mission in mind. Brian W.

The actual Nemesis NXT, John Sharp's plane just qualified for the Natl. Air
Races at an average speed on the course of 386.904mph. That's at about
5,000' MSL! New qualifying record! Last night the site stated that they
did an unofficial run averaging over 390 mph! For reference that's about
50mph faster than the stock P-51 mustangs are running. Brian W.

Hi from sunny Tucson,

I've been over the mach at or below 100', as have many military pilots, and I wouldn't say I was exactly comfortable there. However, I was trained to do it and do it well I did or I wouldn't be here to tell you so.

My Lightning kit is scheduled to be here on the 21st of this month! A week from this Friday!!!

I have received my hardware bundle (nuts, washers and bolts) from Aircraft Spruce. I was told that there are not enough of them to build the airplane and I will have to order more. That does not seem right to me as I expected a complete kit when I purchased this one. My previous experience was with the Kitfox which had a very detailed builders manual and every piece of hardware necessary to build the kit. Any shortages I noted during the inventory process were forwarded to the manufacturer and they filled them quickly. Have any of you experienced this issue before and how did you handle it, i.e. just order some more from Aircraft Spruce or request more from Arion?

By the way, Arion has developed entrance steps and they are anticipated to cost $125 per step and should be ready by the end of October.

Bill, I had a special situation because I ordered my kit before it was really ready to be a kit. Some of the parts came along later, but that caused little problem or delay. I asked Arion to ship anything that was expensive, which they willingly did. I purchased some hardware myself, along with items I chose to upgrade from the kit. Most homebuilders wish to incorporate some of their own ideas to 'improve' the kit, and I would not be surprised if you do too. For me, this included items like the pitot assembly, a throttle quadrant, fuel selector assembly, tinted rear windows, etc.

Enjoy your airplane.

Brian- I had no idea a P-51 Mustang was that fast. I
thought they were slow WWII planes. By the way, I had
a conversation with Jon Sharp about a year ago and he
said that the NXT actually is a great cross-country

Reno is at about 5,000' and about 5,000' runways and they eat pretty much
all of it up. Some other stuff if you like the national air races, last
week a Thunder Mustang had an aborted takeoff, heated the brakes up and went
off the end of the runway. The glowing rotors caught the plane on fire and
burned it up. That was a one of a kind million dollar baby. Last night a
biplane took off, black smoke from the engine, hadn't been run in a couple
of years, the pilot maintained about 30 foot with an observed increasing
angle of attack and slowing of airspeed, the left wing dropped, rudder was
input to keep it falling straight ahead and it pancaked with a lot of runway
left to land on ahead. Pilot was killed. This year they're racing different
kinds of jets besides just the L-39's. They have a T-33 which turned a
525mph lap, an L-29 with a 515, and an T-2 Buckeye with a 505 speed. The
biplanes hit a record qualifying speed of about 255 or so. T-6's at mid
230's, now that's impressive! The unlimiteds featured a highly modified
clipped wing fury called September Fury at about 472mph and Rare Bear at
452, Strega at 451, Dreadnaught a fury with an R-4360 in the nose at about
450, and a highly modified yak at about 445mph! Mondo speed this year.

Charles,
I think that it probably is a good flying cross-country plane, but my
point was that it was really designed as a racer, not a cross-country flyer.
John just got out of the hospital. His wife donated a kidney to him.
Seems that both are doing well and he is flying in this years air races, and
boy what a time! Actually the P-51 mustang would do about 435mph at 25,000
feet. Of course it's slower at lower altitudes. It also had a 1690hp 1650
cu in engine. The British Hawker Fury and Sea Fury were a round engined
fighter and would do about 460mph at 18,000 feet, and the German Tank Ta-152
would do about 472 at 41,000 feet with boost and methanol water injection.
All of these planes were WWII planes. I know that the stock P-51's are
running around the 340-350mph mark at 5,000 feet altitude, and the stock sea
fury about 360-380mph at Reno. Of course the fury has around 3,500hp with
an R-3350 engine, or about 4,000hp with the R-4360. There's also a Bearcat,
Navy WWII called Rare Bear that has a 3350 putting out 4,000 ponies. If
you've never been to an air race it's something to see. It's also something
to hear! I'm wearing a shirt right now of Precious Metal which was a P-51
mustang, but converted to use a Rolls Royce Griffon of about 2200hp. It's

contra-rotating griffon. There was the Pond Racer which was a Rutan design,
twin engined composite with Nissan automotive engines. There are some wild
looking customs being built right now. There's one with an unducted fan,
think cuisinart and looks like a T-38 jet. There's one that is a custom
built fuselage with T-2 buckeye wings and tail, F-86 airbrakes and a big ole
radial in front. Oh and it's a tricycle gear. There's also one for sale
that is partially complete that has a custom fuselage, a 4360 engine of
4000hp, a modified sea fury wing section and F-86 tail, all boosted
controls. There's some really impressive stuff, some are really great
looking planes. Lots of good stories, and unfortunately some planes and
pilots that aren't here anymore. I love this time of year, a week of with

It is very likely that the Arion folks will in fact ship you what you need.

But I would gently suggest a slight attitude adjustment. I am sure there are some manufacturers that have spent the considerable money to make both the directions to build and parts supplied very exact. But frankly, that is not the real standard in the industry.

I could articulate all the reasons for it, but it doesnt matter. We cant control it. We can complain, but it doesnt make us feel better, only worse. As some one noted, " When you express your negative emotions, you dont get rid of them, you only intensify the feelings and clarify the reaction."

I would not suggest what to change your expectations TO; only to suggest that if you lower your expectations of both the build manual and the hardware supplied, you will be happier. The building of aircraft carries enough frustrations.

When you are flying your Lightning at mach 1, 10 feet above the sagebrush, you probably wont be thinking of a couple extra bolts and washers you had to buy.

Here in Houston we dodged a close one last night with Hurrican Humberto. We
didn't have enough warning for that one. If we get 2 inches of rain in an
hour then I'll have water in my apartment here. We've been close several
times before.

Anyhow, today at the air races the two NXT's both turned in 365 times, but
John Sharp's Nemesis cut a guide pylon. Can't remember how they score that,
but time is based on speeds and a perceived line of flight distance around
the pylons. If you cut inside of a pylon they add so many seconds (I think
7) for each lap left in the race and rescore your speed that way. So,
depending on which lap it was he could be looking at 380-390 actual speeds.
Last night a biplane nosed over on landing. Several different planes of
different types have maydayed out of races including a lady that I know in a
Pitts. All of them are fine. Today they did have an L-39 jet crash in
front of the grandstands though. Hit wake turbulence and got flipped over,
went in left wing first inverted from what I hear. Pilot died instantly.
Luckily nobody at home pylon or spectators were hurt. (why they have
deadlines for the aircraft) My favorite Lancair Legacy that usually runs
370's is without engine at the moment. Hope they get it running.

Brian,
You need passwords to see the photos. We can't
see them. The whole deal with the Nemesis as a
X-country machine is that if you are primarily
travelling alone or with one other non-large person,
over a long distance, the Nemesis might make a lot
more sense than a VLJ. At a fraction of the cost of
something comprably as fast as a Cirrus jet or Lancair
evolution or even a lancair IV-P. It seems that for
the speed, fuel burn (cruise (at) 300 kts, 22gph) and
comfort (it looks like a cozy cabin from the
sloair.com website), the Nemesis is actually a bargain
for the jet-set type who needs to get somewhere really
fast. Just like the Lightning is a great deal for
someone looking for speed and safety and low fuel
burn. I know you and Nick seem to only be able to
visualize the Nemesis as a race plane. But with a new
engine in a Nemesis, if you have an engine out at 20K
feet, you're in just as much trouble in a Cirrus or
Piper jet as you will be in the Nemesis. Charles

Oh, forgot about the sign in. Try these, Tim Adams Photographer, from his
website. They're of last year's air race. NXT's. My comments about the
NXT being a raceplane also stem from the fact that every airframe in
existence that I'm aware of either is racing, will be racing, or has raced.
Also, every one of the first three had a main gear failure early on. I
think that a problem was found and fixed, so the new kits shouldn't have
that problem. That's an expensive fix!

that with such a huge investment in the Nemesis, the
guys wouldn't paint them all yellow, for example-
doesn't that quicken the decay of the carbon fiber and

I'm not sure if you have painted the whole plane a darker color if it
matters if the plane is always kept hangared except when flown. Anyhow, I'm
sure tha they wouldn't do it unless they knew what they were doing. Maybe
they don't plan on them lasting that long?

The lightning is mosly white because the aircraft is made of conventional fiberglass and epoxy resins...load bearing areas should b painted a lighter color.......the nemisis is painted darker colors or even black if they like because it is constructed of carbon fiber.
