Well, we finally settled on the final paint scheme. Even though I kind of liked the red scheme the best, I was out voted by the Baltimore Oriole fans in my family and we ended up with white and orange with black trim. I'm hoping to see the aircraft painted and ready for the panel installation when I get back from my trip to Maine.

I guess it's not so bad since I like the colors too. The final orange will be a bit brighter than the pictures I have attached. It's kind of consistent with how I have painted all my R/C helicopters in the past anyway...

I have a MGL Avionics Odyssey on order and will be installing that in the cockpit along with some backup gages and a Garmin SL-40 and GTX-327. I'll have a complete update with the panel layout on my website later this month.

Since up until last month, all of my flight experience has been in Cessna aircraft, I have started flying an Evektor SportStar to get used to the low wing/stick and rudder setup. I'm not a fan of the higher rpm Rotax, but the rest should be somewhat similar, just slower.

Unfortunately, it is the only thing available that resembles a Lightning, (although quite a stretch).

I'm sorry i will miss most of you at the fly-in this year. I need to save my vacation days for the Jabiru engine seminar in October. Next year I will fly my Lightning there!

Hey Jim,

That is going to be one fancy paint job. I was up at Green Landings last week to talk with Ryan and take a quick demo flight. I saw your project while I was up there. It looks like it is coming along rather well. Keep up the good work!

Jim, I REALLY like your paint scheme. I guess it is the R/C modeler in us. I always painted my models in vivid colors so that it was easier to tell orientation at a distance. I guess I have become conditioned to like fancy paint jobs. Yours will be a dandy. You need to send a picture when it is all done.

Do you think a fancy paint job might help a novice pilot avoid spatial disorientation in MVFR then? Smile

Jim,

Looks great!

I am sorry I am not going to get the chance to meet you at Shelbyville having followed your Lightning choice from its early origins and being on the same journey myself, but about 6 months behind you.

I will be really interested in your first Lightning flying experiences, because, like you, most of my experience is in Cessnas. Although recently I flew a Tecnam Sierra and Rans S19 demo plane.

I did enjoy them both, but neither are as quick (LSA) and I doubt either are as responsive as the Lightning, so I am anxious to assess whether the Lightning would stretch my skills too much.

Thanks Jerry. Yeah, my RC helis were almost always orange and white. Yes, I will post a pic to the group once it is done. Also, the pics will be on my website too.

I have also flown the Sierra, SportCruiser, SportStar, Sonex, Zodiac, and Festival. While all of those models fly well, they just can’t compare to the Lightning, (the Sonex comes close, but is a different kind of feel, more like a tiny RV-7). I really liked the Lightning’s flight characteristics. It is light on the sticks, quick, yet well mannered. The others are easy to fly, but the Lightning is flat out fun.

You will love it.

Jim,

I really liked it. I thought it was a fast and nimble little airplane. The one I flew in had a glass panel. It was somewhat difficult to see from the right seat, in the bright sunlight. I guess I am an old steam gauge kind of guy. I did not get much hands on with the airplane, but found it to be very responsive. Ryan indicated that the elevator control is quite sensitive, which I would agree. I was impressed with the Jabaru's minimal vibration and what I thought was low noise....or perhaps I am just getting hard of hearing. All in all I liked it...just need to some sole searching as to whether or not I want to make that kind of financial commitment.

Did that one have the Dynon in it? I have not been impressed with the
brightness of the Dynons in a low wing aircraft. They seem to be "almost"
bright enough when I am flying. You have to concentrate on what you are
looking at which counteracts the reduced workload that the EFIS is supposed
to provide in the first place. I'm like you though, maybe not used to this
type of flying yet, so it is not as natural as someone who flies it all the
time.

I must say that it will be though after I get mine up in the air as I am
putting in a glass cockpit with steam backup.

I really like the Jabiru and they seem like a company that is constantly
working on their product to make it better. I'm pretty excited about
attending the engine seminar in October. I really want to learn as much as
I can about the engine and Pete and the guys are the ones to teach us!

Did you get to see Juan fly his Esqual while you were there? I don't know
what it is about his plane, but when he does a fly by, (over top), the prop
noise makes it sound like a WWII Mustang or Spitfire. Great sound!

No he Esqual wasn't there; at least I didn't see it.

Jim, I don't know if it was a Dynons or not. I have to admit that I really know nothing about electronic panels. I fly a 1972 Piper Cherokee and the closest thing is the to electronics in my handheld GPS...LOL

Great picture, Jim. You have more guts than I. What do you do if the engine quits, besides writing a big check? Being a homebuilder type, my modeling took a little different route than yours. My interest was in giant scale. I wrote a couple of construction articles for the mags, and had a cover or two.

Nice!

Well, if the engine quits, there is usually enough rotor momentum that I can pop the heli back up and over and auto-rotate safely to the ground. I have had the engine quit before, but never while inverted.

I did some articles for MAN and FLYRC on GS fixed wing, but the only thing as big as your airplanes was a 42% Exta…
