Today Nick took off in Jim Goad's Lightning for it's first flight. The half
hour flight was routine and Nick reported it flies hands off and other than
a minor bungee adjustment to get more up trim the aircraft is great!
Congrats to Jim who built the Lightning in Arion Aircraft's builder assist
program.
More details to follow after more flight testing.

Congratulations to Jim and the Shelbyville crew!
I hope some of the fly-in crowd was able to see it!
Jim!

Actually, just about all of the 18 or so in attendance witnessed the first
flight.
Jim was a very proud "papa".
Tomorrow 5 Lightnings and 1 Esqual LS are taxing down to the monthly
Shelbyville fly in breakfast. Hopefully we'll outnumber the RV's tomorrow!!
We would have had 6 Lightnings but Earl was unable to fly up due to weather
in Atlanta. He was able to drive up though.
Pictures to follow.

That is awesome to hear!
Yeah, we love pictures!
I am dying up here in PA. All I can say is that I wish I was there, but
will be at the next on for sure.
Have a good fly to your breakfast.

Lightnings line up on the ramp at SYI for the EAA breakfast. The big one in the back is not a Lightning!

The fly-in weather could not have been better in Shelbyville. There was a gathering of good folks from all over. West Virginia, New York, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee were represented. Friday was highlighted by Jim Goad's plane's first flight, and the Brats, hamburgers, beans, cornbread and fixins. Thanks to Pete, Dana and Barbara and the rest of the KSYI lightning crowd for all that.

Thanks to Pete and Nick for the good food and good company Friday. I got my first ride in the Lightning (I tried to wipe up the excess drool) after the flight. I want one, bad, but have to figure a way to convince "she who must be obeyed". Sorry I didn't get to come Saturday.
Impressions:
Beautiful, great lines.
Very quiet compared to Diamonds, RV, and Kitfox.
Very smooth running.
Good air flow in the cockpit.
Plenty of Room for my 5'10", 210 lbs.
Flys very straight forward, quite responsive, no surprises. I was a little heavy on the rudder, but a couple of hours will fix that. Slightly heavier in the roll axis than than the other two axis. It would roll quite handily, if it were legal to do so.
Faster and cheap to operate.
Didn't get to land it, but Nick did good under my direct supervision ha-ha-ha (may have something to do with experience).
IMHO it will be very hard, if not impossible, to find as good a plane for the money.
