I already have my Corvair engine, but was curious if any one looked into four stroke outboard power heads as an engine option? A Honda 90hp total weight is 379lbs, but I'd have to imagine only 1/3 of that is the actual engine block, and they're rated for 5500 rpm continuous use.

I have just begun looking into non traditional engine alternatives. Most outboard motors have an open loop cooling system, with the water pump located in the lower unit. This leaves a challenge to contain and pump the coolant in our application.
Some of the newer personal water craft have a closed loop cooling system with small, light weight, four stroke engines that put out 80 to 215 HP. Sea Doo uses 3 cylinder, super charged, fuel injected Rotax called 4-Tec. Honda also has a nice unit with potential for flight.
Newer snowmobiles also have similar four stroke possibilities.
Most of these engines are high revving, requiring a redrive unit that adds weight and may not be readily available. So this leads me to dream about the newer motorcycle engines. The Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 cc puts out about 140 hp in stock form. It gives you a choice of 6 gear reductions built into the transmission. I'm guessing all installed weight to be around 165 lbs. These engines are available on E-bay for under $3000 every day. I know these engines are bullet proof.
Can you imagine a first gear STOL takeoff and then shift into high gear at cruise altitude? With an inflight adjustable prop, this might be the ticket.
