I am considering upgrading to a 503 for my firestar II, and was wondering if
any one in this great group of knowledge, would know the best (cheapest)
place to obtain this engine? Will I need anything else like a mounting plate
or will the 447 one I have fit? I would also entertain suggestions for a
three blade prop for it as well.

Larry,
I don't know the best place to buy your engine but I would shop around all
the big dealers including Green Sky and Lockwood etc, also check with Kolb,
sometimes the manufacturers pass engine discounts on to the buyers.
Also consider the C gearbox with the 3.47 reduction and the tapered Warp
drive blades or a Powerfin F model three blade. The big reduction ratio will
give you the ability to swing the 70 -72 inch blades that will deliver
maximum thrust. You will have to raise the engine mounts a little but you'll
know you have all the power you can get from your 503.

Speaking of Props---I think the boys at Kolb are handling one of the
European brands now.. Herb

Larry,

If you want to go all the way to a 582 I can fix you right up. Engine,
prop, mounts, the whole works ready to run. $3,950

A FSII with a 582 turning 4900 rpm goes as fast as one with a 503
turning 5600 rpm and uses about the same amount of fuel. There are
reasons to choose a 503 over a 582, but fuel economy isn't one of them.

Richard Steve Larry
I have two friends who ran Rans S-12 's side by side for several
years... One with a 503 and the other with a 582. The 582 won on Fuel
consumption. Herb

Larry
It should be noted that the 503 ran out to over 600 hours trouble free
and the 582 went down with a seizeure at 150 or so.. Herb

prefer to run the engine a bit faster than midrange. Then too I am

if I had the power, I would abuse it. It is the way that I am.

Larry,

I'm in the process of converting my Firestar 2 to twin Hirth F-33's. I took off my 503, but am keeping it until I'm done testing the twin installation. I have the engines mounted, but still have to work out the throttle hookup, hook up the fuel system, and do the wiring. I'm thinking about two months more.

The 503 has 50 hours on it, and has never been overheated, seized, or in any way been abused. It has a B box, twin altitude compensated carbs, powerfin two bladed prop, and comes with a 503 "Smart Single" digtal engine monitering system and an analog tach. It's completely ready to go except for the engine mounts, which can be obtained from Kolb or elsewhere. I used this engine to climb to 16,000 feet, and it never has missed a beat. You can get back to me via a Private Message if you are interested.

Here's a photo of the engines temporarily mounted. The struts are attached to the original mount with Lord mounts. The engines are each mounted on the struts with their own set of Barry mounts.

Looks nice. I wonder what would happen if the belt broke on one engine
while they were in full throttle climbout? A free wheeling prop on one side
and full thrust on the other would sure make it want to twist those struts
and lord mounts. Kirk

Check with the New Kolb Co. My buddy just got a new 447 and after checking
out prices with other distributors, Kolb offered the best deal. Included
extras such as: engine mount plate, cables, muffler assembly, fuel pump, etc.
As I understand, it's like getting the engine kit part of a Kolb kit.
