Hi Guys,

As soon as I heard about the exemption on our annual proficiency flight area limitation letter I wrote the required request for exemption and had all of the required documents in my hot little hand at the door of my friendly local FSDO manager. He hadn't even heard of the Sept. 11 memorandum yet, so I gave him a copy. Four days later I had my exemption in the mail. All I can say is that nothing beats a personal face-to-face with your local FSDO when the opportunity presents itself. It cleared up any potential misunderstandings or delays in processing and was a good opportunity to put a face and name with the "N" number if it ever came across his desk. I now have my letter of exemption (just four days later). It lent new and more positive meaning to "We're from the FAA and we're here to help you". Then again, maybe I just got lucky, but no guts, no glory. You probably already know this, but for those of us who don't, the current memorandum exemption of the 300 and 600 mile proficiency flight area annual letter only applies to PROFICIENCY flights. We still have to list airshows and formal aerobatic competitions that we intend to be a part of. At least that was the FSDO Manager's take on it. Hopefully, this will also be excluded at a later date as part of the 8130.2 updated version. For now, that part still stands. Right now I'm just having a blast attempting to learn why Ranger keeps bobbing around while he's trying to teach me the basics of formation flying (I strongly suspect it's me doing the bobbing and not him).

I sincerely expect Ranger is doing that on purpose. As a typical Navy type, he is intimated by the female of our species and is trying to 'discourage' you. While us more enlightened civil type pilots wouldn't do anything like. But! it is just possible - maybe he can't fly straight.
