The ones I've seen certainly don't look the same.

They are different engines but some of the parts are the same. If you find
the right model the gaskets interchange as do most of the rotary valve
parts. from there things differ.

I think the important difference is that the Sea Doo Rotax doesn't have a integral water pump.

also sea doo crankshafts have threaded ends unlike the sleds and aviation
motors. so first thing you would have to do is change the crankshaft.

Dave ; you seem to know , so do you think is worth the effort in terms of money savings ? . The other option that I cosider is buying a runout and rebuild it .

I have been trying to use the lowest cost method for awhile.
The sled motors are the closest but you get single ignition. Some areas just
put a gearbox on a sled engine and when they run out they go to the skidoo
dealer and buy a new long block.
I prefer to keep the dual ignition and have stuck with the aviation motors
but use rebuilt cranks from a good engine builder. gaskets i get from
aftermarket which are the same as some sleds. I use water pump rv shaft
stuff from the 580 seadoos from about 1990.
If you have nothing now I would buy the cheapest complete aviation 582 i
could find( holes in the case, broken crank and everything) to get the
carbs, igintion ,gearbox, exhaust, etc and then buy a new long block blue
head 582. and make one engine. That is the least expensive way to go if you
find a low cost doner engine.
If you find a good runout 582 you can get them rebuilt by one of the
national engine rebuilders using aftermarket sled stuff for about 1500 but
don't tell them its form a plane or the work stops there.
using rotax aviation parts to completely rebuild a runout engine will cost
about the same as a new short block

Very good Dave ; Do you mind pointing to the rebuilders , source for short blocks etc. . If you want do it off line , I didn't mention , but the project in question is a 701 . Thx

As soon as your local SkiDoo shop sees the dual ignition they will start to
ask questions and as you say the work stops there.
