Getting ready to slosh my spar tubes on my Classic 4 Sptr with epoxy primer and I'm trying to find out how much I need to mix up for one wing or one spar from someone who has done this. Don't want to mix too much or too little. Leon Morris/Classic 4 Sptr/60%/Thinking Jabiru/ Flower Mound,TX

Leon,

I was a nut for corrosion protection on my build, but, I did fall down when

it came to the spars. I had no problem tapping off the area that was going

to have ribs or false ribs on the outside and painting, but when it came to

the inside I could never figure out how to protect them more than the Aldine

could without building up too much primer in it. I was worried about not

getting the inserts in properly after and if I waited for the inserts to be

in it would leave buildup around the inserts and rivets. 9 years later and

still looking great inside.

I got some aerosol cans of etch primer and 12 feet of one eighth aluminium

tube.  Bend a right angle in the tube close to the end and stick the spray

nozzle from a can in the end of the tube so it will squirt along in the

middle of the spar.   Then attach the can to the other end of the tube and

slide it up the spar.  No fuss, no mess, and it made a great job of painting

the inside, and from memory I think two cans did all four spars.

Thanks to all who imputed. My inserts are already installed, so sliding a aerasol can up in down is out. Have cosidered Aldine but have read several reports and don't know on how long I should let it set and the ratio to delute. And yes I have heard about using tennis balls on the ends. You dont put the can up the spar.  The can stays outside and the paint goes

up the tube.  Although it is 12 feet from the can to the spray nozzle the

tube holds very little paint and the spray nozzle on the end of the tube

works just as well as if it were still on the can.  Slide the tube up both

sides of the inserts, spraying as you pull it back out.   Works perfectly.

My wife and I sloshed the spar interiors after the ribs had been installed by pouring 8 oz. of thinned epoxy chromate primer into each spar and capping the ends with old tennis balls pressed in. Total paint used was less then a pint. The attached photo shows the interior of one of the spars which was broken in an accident. Note the primer covering the spar. Prior to sloshing we cleaned with metal prep and alodined.

Brian; I read and re-read what you did,just acouple questions. You can actually get enough pressure out of the can to go that 12' up the tube and still get a good spray out of the nozzle? What is etch primer? Not familier. Leon Morris/Classic 4/60%/Flower Mound,TX

Leon,  I got some lambs wool at a leather shop and tied it in the middle of 

a length of cord.  I saturated the lambs wool with primer and dragged it 

through and through the spar several times adding a bit of primer each time. 

My inserts were installed as well and felt that the primer would seal the 

edges as well as the rivet ends.  I re-threaded the cord so-as to get both 

sides of the spar.
