How thick should the seat cushions be? I'd also like to hear whether folks are making their own upholstery or having it made. All perspectives welcome.

I used three inches of Confor Foam for the seat bottom, one inch of each color. The plans and material for this are available from Hi-Tech foams. ( http://www.seatfoam.com/ ) This makes a very comfortable seat. I f you are very tall, you may need to use a thinner seat cushion and/or mount the seat pan lower. I carved and glued the seat foam myself but farmed out the upholstery job.
