 Trying to install gap seals on my Firefly today.. made a mess of the first  one...Wondering what the technique could be ?  Missing something in my  reclining years...Herb

Herb, 

 After you prepare your overlapped tape (assumed you know how to do this)  cut a short section of this as a test, a few inches long.

  

 From the top of the wing, apply one of the sticky sides to the top, back  edge of the wing trailing edge.

 You will see the whole tape assy above the wing and aileron. with the other  sticky edge towards the rear and pointing up.

  

 Place that aileron FULL down.

  

 Push the tape down through the gap between the wing trailing edge and  aileron leading edge.

  

 From underneath, push the sticky part on the underside of the aileron  leading edge.

  

 If you have too much or too little tape length left, adjust by changing the  position on the wing (step 1)

  

 Now you will know where to start when applying the tape on the wing.

  

 Go for it with a full length piece.

  

 Goo luck, It is easy once you get the hang of it.

 I use the kitchen counter top. (Wives and mothers love this)

  

 Take a length of tape, (more than you need) and lay it sticky side  up.

  

 Secure it by taping each end down using tape.

  

 Lay a second piece down over it and leave about a half inch exposed along  the full length.

  

 About a half inch of the top piece will stick to the counter top.

  

 Trim each end to achieve the desired length.

  

 Carefully carry it out to the plane and apply.

  

 Remove all traces of airplane activity from the kitchen lest all Hell break  loose.

Here is the easy way. Forget the tape overlap. Get some 4 inch wide tape, stick it on the bottom of wing-flap, sprinkle baby powder on the exposed adhesive. Your done.

   Should have made myself more clear....no problem with  application,,,the problem is in handling..at one time or the other both hands  are stuck to the tape.. when I get a suitable piece layed flat on a table, the   overlap piece is just very difficult to place into position..static  electricity etc.. once it sticks--you are stuck!  

  

   Anyone tried straight pins to hold the first piece in position?     Herb

Well here is my  advise, if you want to do it right forget about the book binding stuff and use 3  inch finishing tape. I have done both and the finishing tape is easy to do. Ten  you paint it with a brush. I replaced the book binding stuff twice on mine  before I used the finishing tape.If you want to know how to do it get with  me off line.lt is easy.

Herb, Yell if you have any questions. You can also mark the countertop with  a dry erase marker to aid in positioning the tape. That first piece is hard to  see.

  

 There are many ways to do the gap seal.

 This method was Bryan Melborn's.

 IMHO,  This  is the nicest looking and it is very durable unless  your plane sits out 24/7.

 It is almost invisible unless you really look. 

 You can remove it by using a little heat from a hair dryer(Yup, you guessed  it,From the girlfriend's bathroom) and clean up with googone. It does not harm  Polytone in my experience.  Test yours.

 I buy mine from TNK. About the same price and Travis keeps it in stock.

This was put on with "finishing tape" and painted, I forget what

size I used. All the aircraft fabric places sell it where ever you get

your covering supplies.
