Ray,



Yes some people charge $2000 - 3000 for floats to fit Lazair/Kolb.



And that is cheap compared to some of the other heavier factory built stuff.



There are 750 lb floats available used for $600 - 700.



I bought mine for $500 broken ( I was in love with plane at that point).



I found some real neat wooden floats, Google "Muk Tuk" I think...

scratch built or kit. His site is worth reading just for the fun of his mind 

set.

I also found the Muk-Tuk floats and site stories an enjoyable read even if your not looking for floats.



I was thinking of a mono float that might sit between the existing landing gear so I could still land off water.



If this drought keeps up I may just use the extended shoreline to take off from as the water level drops and exposes a long beach landing area.

I built a set of alouminom floats from plans  but uou can find them used  building your own will cost you alot of time and you need the space we had a set of plans floating around for free the material will cost over $1,000   mal mk 2 pilot

How did you seal the rivet seams on your aluminum floats?



I'm going to try designing a single float for the Kolb Ultrastar if possible to keep the weight light.



Have not decided on a material....have to do the basic shape configuration first to see what is feasable.

 Don't know about that, But, Can-Zac and Czech Float both have built the  Zenair design and both use 3M 5200.  I currently fly the Czech Float and am  waiting for a set from Can-Zac. Czech Float has tried 2 part urethanes but the  last time I talked to them they went back to 3M.

You're right, Steve.  5200 and its' competitor, SikaFlex, are waterproof and probably the strongest and most flexible adhesives I've ever seen.  Used them a lot on boats in another life, and when you stick something with one of 'em you'd best want it to stay stuck, 'cause you're not gonna get it apart again.   There is a solvent, but it's mostly for cleanup.  Doesn't penetrate joints very well, and takes a loooong time. 

 

 I saw a documentary on stickums the other night and they made a big deal out of another 3M product.......a tape called, uh, RBX ??  RHB ?? Something like that, and it's amazing stuff.                 Lar.

Steve , I'm all behind  5300 I was a commercial fisherman for 31 years and we  all used 5200 for all kinds of waterproof connections it will fasten and have more strength that what ever you are fastening , be it fiberglass to wood or steel to fiberglass the 5200 would be the strongest component in any joint  always something else would come apart before the  5200 . In re rivets -- as I recall when going thru the Edo factory many years ago -- they had a spool of zinc-chromate tape, quite thin, sort of like electrician's tape; that they put on all the faying surfaces before riveting. On course most of it squeezed out but it did seal the seams well.do not archive

I like the idea of a monofloat for the US... seems it'd do a better job of 

keeping spray off that low hanging prop.
